Prologue: Dec, 23 2008

I am not one to be sentimental, or nostalgic for days gone by. I can not say why are the way we are but for millennia we have been writing your history, my people are the time keepers. I am young among my people, physically only eighteen born in the 1920, reborn in 1938, as what you see me today. As an eternal, a genetic freak, in the most arcane terms one that anyone can understand I am a vampire. I was born of a normal human mother and father like all of us but lost the genetic lottery in a big way.
The winter wind moved across the yard in waves. Pushing the light powdery snow in to hills and valleys in my front yard. The cold had not bothered me for years but it was ice to feel it on my skin. And I didn’t really want to go inside, there had been a note on the freezer that morning that read only ’we need to talk- Jim’ and those kinds of notes never mean anything good. It was the day before Christmas Eve. I closed my eyes and tried to remember what a real Christmas was like. With family and friends I just couldn’t. after I changed I left hoe and was mostly on my own there was only one Christmas that I could remember that had that same feeling of togetherness. How many years had it been? Since I had seen him? Since that night when everything changed? sixty-five. I was sure of it. I closed my eyes, and I could picture it, a club filled with people, dance music, and them.

Part 1: The First Meeting

Ch 1: Dec. 23, 1943

Deanna Milford

Sitting off by m self I wasn’t exacting anything to happen short of me getting a little tipsy and going home alone. I had developed very low expectations. I found my way over to a table on the far side of the dance floor where I could people watch with out being bothered. I had been sitting off by myself for about a half an hour when they walked in, thin sallow and well I could not put my finger on it but something about them kept drawing my eye. The one who seemed to be in the lead of the group unparticular, he was tall with well groomed black hair and the most spectacular brown eyes that I had ever seen. They made their way to the tables and sat down not to far from me.
I sat watching them though I tried not to stare, I just couldn’t take my eyed off of them. Every time one of them looked I hid my eyes around the fifteenth awkward minute of me gaping at them  decided that I would go over and talk to them rather then continue to ogle them. I stood up and then lost my nerve and sat back down. I couldn’t do it. I buried my head in my hands and just let my mind wander.

Maxus Kolbe

“Hey guys do you see that girl?” I asked tapping the table with my fist. The others looked up and went back to their to talking amongst themselves. There were five of us altogether, James, Paul, Timothy, Isaac and me and we had know each other for centuries. Sitting at a table in the club we were getting ready to say good bye for a while, I was going into the army not that it was a new sensation for me I was a soldier that was all that I could do. Isaac was going to California to work Paul and Timothy were going into the army as well but they were going to the Pacific theater and since James was a cop he planned on staying put as long as he could so that we would have someone to come home to when the War in Europe was over. Given what we were all we had was each other.
“you mean the creepy one whose been staring at you all night?” Paul asked. He was slight with blond golden hair that fell in rough curls when he let it grow out but was barely visible since his hair was cut in the classic army flat top, and black-brow eyes that were growing dull from the liquor.
“yeah she’s cute but she’s a little young for you.” James laughed and sipped his beer. Was well we knew that he lived in Judea and that his father was a Roman from what is now northern Italy so he was also very fair he even had blue eyes. he wore his hair slicked back which made him look like a salesman.
Stared into my glass I smirked “everyone is a little young for me. And she‘s the first vamp chick I‘ve seen in about a hundred years.” the bend began to lay a slow song “so what do you think should I?”
Isaac shrugged and said “Your call Maxus.”
“I’m going over there, at the very least it‘ll stop her from staring at me.” I stood up and walked slowly toward the girl. As I walked I counter the years since I had… well, um a gentle man never tells  but it had been along time. Vampires don’t sweat their hearts don’t race, they don’t have adrenaline rushes or feel butterflies in their stomach but at that moment I remembered what I was like. She was sitting with her head in her hands when I walked over so I sat down I had never been one to let personal space get in the way of a good time being a solider for most of my life I usually just take what I want. The girl looked up, and here eyes went wide.
“Hi there I’m Max” I smiled offering my hand, “I noticed you staring you have very pretty eyes.”
She took my hand and I kissed hers softly, “you did?” she blushed “thank you.” she tried very hard to keep from smiling.
“I bet you have an amazing smile” I said leaning in closer.
“I don’t smile”
“come on I bet there’s something that can make you smile” I said with a grin “I can make anyone smile.”

Deanna

He was sitting right there flirting and moving in closer and closer his he pulled his chair close enough that his leg grazed mine  he hooked his foot behind the leg of my chair and pulled me closer.
“I can make anyone smile.” Max said softly touching my face with his fingertips, “You’re way to beautiful to frown”
“You’re not smiling” I say coyly looking down and away.
“so if I smile you’ll smile too?” he asked. I nodded. Then he flashed a smile and I saw them, a set of inch and a half long fangs. I had met others like me but, never anyone who had the same- issue I had.
“Your fangs are huge” I blurted it out showing my fangs then I covered my mouth.
“Yours aren’t much smaller.” he laughed “let me see,” I opened my mouth letting my jaw go slack. Max smiled really big, “beautiful absolutely beautiful, I’ve never seen a set of fangs so clean, you‘ve never had a real drink have you?”
“I’ve only ever had animal’s blood.”
He shakes his head, “Tribe was it?”
I nodded then asked “Why are we like this?”
“It’s a disease, but not one you can catch one you‘re born with and that there isn‘t a cure for. Even The Son couldn‘t cure it he said that his father made us the way we were so that others might know His power that we were meant to carry the truth and keep time that we were not demons, we were divine.”
“Really?”
“Joshua was a smart man” he replied. He  was quiet for a second then an up beat song came on and he turned t me and smiled “you wanna dance?”
He pulled me out on to the dance floor and soon I fell into the beat. He was an amazing dancer but I guess he had a lot of time to practice. He pulled me in close to him so that we were dancing cheek to cheek… or cheek to chest since he was a lot taller then me. “you should come with my friends and I, we’re not a tribe so you don’t have to worry about that, we just happened to end up living in the same building.”
“Will they accept me?” I looked up into his eyes and he smiled.
“you’re family.” he leaned down to kiss my cheek and I let him. “we’ve already accepted you.”
