Annyong haseyo, jeoneun Rui Xi imnida.

Standard greeting and introduction, minus the Rui Xi part since that's my name. Hey look, a language lesson already, haha.

Nice to meet you all. Rui Xi is my name, but you can call me Eien or Rei.

A lot of Europeans here I see. Hm...I feel a little lonesome...

This topic caught my eye because I'm also a bit of a language nut...I speak seven languages with varying degrees of fluency--mostly ones from here in the Orient--Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, Tagalog, Illocano, then there's English and Spanish.

...Spanish was forced on me by my parents, so I'm not very good at that one, even after three years of it >.> I hate verb conjugations.

I'd have to say though, my best language is English and as a Chinese-Korean girl, it's a little embarassing I'm better at it than my native tongues >///<;

Don't worry Rui Xi~ Mika is here. I'm Northern Asian (quite an Eastern Asian), you're no longer lonesome.

Long way back from my posts (months ago...), oh I'm able to speak, read and write a little of Japanese and Mandarin.

Some people have been wondering about my grammar use, so I thought I would clear it up here.

Like the Japanese, we add suffixes to the end of people's names. (i.e: Minho-oppa, Hyori-unni, Amanda-sunbae, etc)

Only we are more gender specific.

Here some of the general ones:

-oppa: what a female refers to an older male that they don't consider an ajussi.

-unni: what a female refers to an older female that they don't consider an ajumma.

-ajussi: any gender can use this to call an older male--equivalent to mister.

-ajumma: any gender can use this to call an older female--similar to mrs, or maam. Some take offense to this though, so use with care.

-hyung: what a male calls an older male that he does not deem old enough to be an ajussi

-sunbae: can be used by both genders, and is someone who came before you in a certain proffession--similar to Japan's use of senpai.

-sunbaenim: the more formal way to say sunbae

-noona: what a male calls an older female that they don't consider an ajumma

-nunim: what a male calls an older female that they may or may not consider an ajumma. this is just a more formal and respectful form of noona.

-hyungnim: what a male calls an older male that he does not deem old enough to be an ajussi. A more formal and respectful form of hyung.

----Mandarin----

I use these a lot. These are separate from the Korean lesson above.

-ge-ge: older brother
-mei-mei: little sister

----------------

They're not hard, but some people may get mixed up sometimes--like nunim and unni--because they sound similar.

I agree Chinese is more gender specific.

In Mandarin, example:

Gege: Older brother
Didi: Younger brother
Meimei: Younger sister
Jiejie: Older sister

Same goes for grandparents and cousins...

@elonah: Probably by studying them. Basically, it comes through learning and practice. Like when I started using spanish to my family members when we chat. ^^

Plus, there are some non-english words which are considered in the vocabulary such as 'hoi polloi', 'RSVP', 'beau monde', 'Au Courant', 'aficionado', etc.

@Eien: No worries. I'm an Asian as well. ^^

RSVP: Respondez sil vous plait

Agreed, such as "rendezvous', 'coup d'etat', 'chateau', 'bureau' etc are non-English words which borrowed from French.

You guys are putting me to shame... I only speak German, Swiss German (and yes, it's not just another dialect ), some French (because I used to live in the French sector), and a bit of English.

My greatest issue is with spelling... sometimes English and German spelling is very close to each other.

Also, I sometimes use a word I think is English, but it's not... that'll keep people guessing

Coolies, another Finn. (Btw, is the plural partitive of 'salama' -lightning bolt- 'salamia' or 'salamoja', or 'salamoita'?)

*Sneaks out again*

Mae, your lightning bolt question is tricky! Especially for me who speaks with mixed dialects (Turku, Helsinki and all between..) XD

My friends i have thought about your question too, and still we aren't sure. I've come to a conclusion that it can't be "Salamia" because that's plural partitive for salami, you know, the sausage... it would sound weird. Try to say it couple of times and you notice it too I'd go for "Salamoita", but don't ask me why!

LOL, cool Finnish language and dialects! And Brycej is doing good enough to be multilingual instead of German, unlike there are nationalities who are monolingual.
