I find it strange of that surname. Is that surname an allusion rooted in some kinds of classical literature

I just looked up "throp" and it referred me to "thorp" which is an archaic word for hamlet/village.

So, Darkthrop could mean "from a dark village".


I don't know if Amanda intended this, but it works.

dark = lacking light

so it could also mean 'dark village'
or 'village lacking light'

though I don't think it has any deeper meaning than what arggie put in.

Been looking around and it doesn't seem to appear anywhere. Not like the deavas, ahriman or the snow queen.

often it turns out that names have a deeper meaning, even if it isn't intended. my character Min'hira, for instance--apparently "min" means "clever" when used in a chinese name. Masana Iiyami, my necromancer-- Ii Yami would roughly mean "good darkness."

"darkthrop" may have just sounded good to Amanda, and the "dark village" thing may have just worked XD

Min can mean either "clever" or "pretty" depends on whether you write it as 敏 or 闵. But they are almost ever used in girls' names, because the clever means more like sharp and intelligent, knowing not to fall into the wrong hands or marry a wrong husband kind of thing.

It might also only be related to a fantasy surname. "Dark" is pretty clear and argoyle said "throp" could mean village. Although I think amanda mainly intended to give the surname a mysterious and evil appeal,so "darkthrop",and I dare say it works really well

"ming" = 明 = "bright". Of course, just like you can use 'bright to describe a clever person, you can use it so in Chinese too (e.g. cong ming). Often used more in boys' names than girls'.

I find the surname very impressive. Even without an inner meaning its sounds pretty dark.
