I learned about why aboriginal people are called 'Indians'.
This is because long ago when people in Europe wanted spice, they had to trek over land and mountains and such to get to Asia. One time, a man (sorry, can't remeber the name) decided to sail to Asia. Only he didn't end up in Asia, he ended up landing in North America. The aboriginal people had darker skin that must have resembled that of India, for he called them Indians. This is accurate to some extent if you believe that aboriginals came from Asia following game. But to others, it isn't accurate. I hate the new HST tax in Canada. It seems to imply that clothing and shoes are luxury items if you're a teen/adult. HST is charged on shoes over size 6 and teen/adult clothing. > ![]()

@Yuffie: The common terms for 'indians' that are used now are Native Americans in the US and First Nations in Canada. I used the term "status & non-status Indian" in my previous post since that's still the legal term used by the federal government. I didn't explain that in the previous post since I didn't want to confuse people.

@slim: Thanks, that's who I was talking about...
@mizzou: Thank you for clarifying. I simply love learning about all of this history... More Canada Facts: - we have 10 provinces and 3 territories (nova scotia, new brunswick, p.e.i., quebec, newfoundland & labrador, alberta, manitoba, saskatchewan, and british columbia) - we have 2 official languages: french & english - our current primeminister is Stephen Harper - people of all cultures and races come here - we were once a colony of Britain, divided into upper and lower Canada. We have since become independant. - you can get many varieties of... well... everything here! - Our Capital is Ottawa

hmm, the term "indians" were also implied to us by the spaniards back then. they called us filipinos "indios".. related to "indians" which implies darker skin color.. etc etc. but of course, we were not indians,, haha, they thought we were.

What's funny, though, is that all Natives I've spoken to refer to themselves as Indians xD It's only everyone else that really calls them Natives or Aboriginals! Anyway, I, too, am from Canada. It's hard to sum up the whole country, though, because it's incredibly diverse. I recently moved from southern Ontario to northern Ontario and even a "small" distance like that feels like I'm in a completely different place! The culture and "feel" of this city is very different from the places I've been in southern Ontario. In any case, I think Canada is a wonderful country and us Canadians should take pride in it more. I loved the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics because the whole country felt united (for once!) in cheering on our athletes. I love how culturally diverse we are and that it doesn't matter where you're from, you will be accepted. All my life, I lived near Toronto - a great city with lots of tourist attractions - and I never really visited these tourist places. I remember going to the CN Tower when I was very little but haven't gone inside since. It wasn't until I was about 18 that I visited the Royal Ontario Museum. I never visited any of the art galleries there. I didn't go to the malls there very often. I also have a friend whose hometown is near the tourist town of Tobermory, Ontario, and when I put on Facebook that I went there, he told me that he had never actually gone there, despite it being practically in his backyard! He said that he would make a point to visit there...eventually xD So, yeah, I think if it's right near you and always there, you tend not to take notice of it xD

It seems to be the opposite where I live. While some do call themselves Indians, most of the ones I know call themselves Aboriginal, Native, or First Nation. I know some that don't like being called Indian and take offense to it. It just depends on the person.

@Mariedan - it is too bad that transportation is expensive, and we all suffer from that to different degrees.
That is a challenge, I think, for you to sit down and really look a what you can do, and make a commitment to yourself to find one thing that you can afford to do and have a party with it! We have a quarry in our town that flooded years ago. It is now the town's main park and there is a swimming area there, with a lifeguard. We have picnics there with all our kids and their families, and everyone looks forward to it. The best part is I can walk to this place! Perhaps there is a place near you that you too can build some fine memories with your loved ones?

There will always be some who have more than others, that is the of life. The challenge is to be generous when you have more than enough, and to live within your means when you do not!
I was brought up in a community that taught that a family gives 10% to the church or to charity, puts 10% into saving for the future when times are hard and then you live on the 80% that is left. Because of this I have a good understanding of living within my means. Although I no longer am an active member of the Lutheran church, I still give 10% to charity. I support a mission that helps the homeless, and give to the local food bank. I also support several international charities that do fine work in some very hard hit parts of the world. I was not always so fortunate as I am now, but I was helped by people I did not know, and that made all the difference when I was once again able to work and get ahead in life. 10 - 10 - 80 is the formula for a happy life.

God,please, get me out of this country! You don't want to come here, trust me!

Klaus - I am sorry that you are unhappy: your signature is quite telling. I notice that you use Red XIII for your signature. He was a prisoner, held by the Shinra for research purposes. Final Fantasy 7.
