I was thinking to myself recently... Why does the present seem much harder than the past? Is it because you are wiser or is it because it is over and done with.

What is your view on this matter.

I think that my past was harder then my present, I am more independent, can speak up for myself, I have more friends, I actually enjoy life, and I can't wait to see what future brings me ^^

Nahh, despite the world going wrong, the more it goes the more I feel good .. i'm independant, i'm (scarcely) paid up, I do have some money, and hmm yes I'm female now too, and I've got my family back, and well everything just trends for the better ) My past was genuine hell compared to now, and being wiser (it's the trend) only helps me enjoy life without getting scammed at stuff or something

Maybe you're just going through a hard moment or something?

Life does seem to get more complex as you grow up, doesn't it? I don't know if you're referring to a specific situation in your life right now or about life in general, but here are my thoughts.

I believe it's because we learn more, gain greater awareness of the people and the world around us, and take on more responsibility. As a child, all you have to worry about is yourself and even then, it's about little things - like, getting your homework done or deciding which toys to play with.

When you're an adult, you make much bigger decisions, such as what to use your money for (clothes? food? a house v.s. an apartment? school?) or what kind of career you want. You also realize that you're not the center of the universe and that you must take into consideration other people, too. Moreover, you learn more about the world - all that is good as well as all that is bad, such as wars and corruption and, in general, that life isn't fair.

So it's not so much that life is harder than before. It always has been difficult. It's just that, as you grow, you come to that realization. It's almost like taking off rose-colored glasses you never knew you were wearing.

Still, just know that no one has a perfect or an easy life! But does that get everyone down? Heck, no! Take everything one day at a time, fight each battle as it comes, cross the bridge when you get there, and don't forget to ask for help from time to time. I ask my parents and my friends questions all the time, and I'd be nowhere without them.

There's a quote:
"Today is better than yesterday. Tomorrow is going to be better than today."

Seems that this also applicates to problem you might have.

I am talking about life in general.
Can it also be based on the persons personality?

Well sure it can be based on personality. If you're someone that sees the world in a glass is half empty type view, then things might see harder to you. But on the other hand, if you view the world in a glass is half full type view, then the world may not seem so difficult to you.

I think that when there's something big coming up in your life, it can seem really large and difficult because it's new. You may never have crossed a bridge similar to that one.

For example, if someone was going to go on a two week trip by themselves for the first time, then it would probably be scary to them. It would be hard to get over the fact that you would be alone, and that you would have only yourself to depend on. Once you've gone on the trip, though, and something new is coming up for you, the present will once again seem harder because you've gotten over the trip and it won't seem as hard to you.

Personality can have a lot to do with this, too. If you are kind of timid, then you would see upcoming events as scary and stick to what you know. What you know would be your past, and it would seem much easier to you. You would be harder for you to try the hotdog with mustard and onions instead of have the usual hotdog with ketchup.

If you're really tough, and you've done a lot of things, then the past will seem harder. You may have been the skydiving tightrope walking kind of person, and now it's just easier for you to try the onion/mustard hotdog.

Also, your situation has a lot to do with how you see things. If you're a business executive with some tough new competition, then now will definitely seem harder. You might be losing money and be upset. If you were poor, though, and were somehow taken away from the life of poverty and had a new life, then now would seem easier than the past.

I used some funny analogies in there, so just go with it.

maybe the bad stuff from before just doesn't seem as significant any more.

I know a lot of people, who grew up in the old country, who'll reminisce about those days and actually miss the daily hour long walk that goes uphill both ways, etc. etc., because there are so many positive things that just don't happen in the new country.

I guess things change over time too, not just over distance.

@Wolfie: Yeah. Sometimes, when you're gone from a place, you miss everything about it. It's just hard to be happy all the time, eh?

$Yuffie: Sure seems so. I think it happens with time too, like when a place changes really fast.

Thanks everyone for that. I understand it better more now that you've explained it.

I feel very happy now and one thing for sure is that writting this just gets easier by the minute.

sometimes it's just better to live in the now rather than think of whatever horrors is gonna happen tomorrow. You'd drive yourself into a depression/suicide if you think about how life is pointless and meaningless (at least to me. no point in worrying too much about life. )
