RIP Steve Jobs

Yesterday Steve Jobs, one of the founders of Apple, died at age 56 from cancer.

I'm no mac fanboy, heck, most of our games don't even RUN on macs, but I would be a fool not to point out what a huge impact this man had on everyone's life. I want to touch on two lesser known things:

#1: NeXT Computing. This was, all things told, Job's great failure. They designed workstations for higher education, but never really made it anywhere. In order to bring Jobs back to Apple, they acquired this company, turning his failure into a reasonable success. In the end the idea was good enough that they build the majority of the osX operating system on the NeXT Platform.

#2: Pixar Films. I actually didn't know this until he died... like I said I am not a fan boy. Jobs took over Pixar, a then failing division of Lucas Arts, and turned it into the epic film powerhouse it is today, ending with the acquisition by Disney and turning Jobs into the largest single shareholder of the company.

And of course we all know the original stories, the founding of Apple and it's epic, yet failed, rivalry with Microsoft and then the return of Steve Jobs to Apple and the rise of the iOS and return of the mac. There's no doubt in my mind the world of computers wouldn't be the same without Jobs, so we here at Amaranth Games take our hats off in his honor.

Learn more about his life and career at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs

Here's today's topic: Now that Apple has lost Steve Jobs will it return to the barely surviving company it once was? Where do you see the fate of this tech giant?

Words from The Fool:

All I remember from the Apple II, the first computer I used, was flying toasters and Oregon Trail. It wasn't until the iPhone 3G that I actually purchased a apple product. With the exception of the iPad (maybe) I can't see myself ever purchasing a mac desktop or laptop. Visionary as Steve may have been, Windows dominates the game market... and that's all I care about. No fooling.

I was quite sad to hear that he had died... RIP Steve Jobs indeed.

I'm a big fan of Apple devices, and I think that the company will still do well, even if Jobs is dead. The company is huge, and they'll find a way to continue on in the direction that Jobs was going in with their products.

I'm afraid the company will go down-hill from here. They can only milk the existing products so far, and to be honest when something like this has happened in the past 99% of the time it did not turn out well...

My mom is planning on getting the iPhone 4S, and I will be inheriting her old iPod when that happens. So, even though I'm not an iFan, I still enjoy Apple's products. I've used a Mac before, and boy, are they cool.

I don't own any and I mean ANY Apple products, but I gotta respect any man who made his life so meaningful that when he died, there were no regrets (well except maybe the iPhone 4S, or so I heard XD). He revolutionised the world of computers, and like it or not, created the iPad which is gonna singlehandedly destroy a huge portion of the PC market. So RIP Steve, and thank you for your contribution to mankind!

What did Steve Jobs do to make people worship him? He was the CEO. He did not start the company and he did not make iPods. He did nothing but approve the ideas, which I admit was brave. Still no reason to care for his death at all since guess what, we did not even know him

Um, wasn't he one of the co-founders of Apple?

:.:.:

Anyway... I do like my iPod, and the first computer I used was a mac. I think it's sad he died to cancer, especially considering he probably had really good treatment and still lost to it.

If I take off my fool hat for a moment, being CEO - a good CEO - is a lot more difficult than it seems. Imagine having a thousand people shouting at you in a room with their ideas and your job is to pick the best one. That is just the first step- then there are design decisions and business partnerships and politics and finance and legal teams and they all need your time and signature. Do some CEOs half-ass it? You bet! And they fail. Jobs never failed, really, and most people agree he was rigerous, anal, and super detail oriented. So no, he didn't physically put togethher the iPod himself, but he had the skills to and he saw the big picture when nobody else did. If it happens once it's a fluke, he managed it 4 times. Think about that!

Jobs surpassed everything he set himself. I believe he's a good deal responsible for our modern inventions, I don't mean iPhone, I mean the PC craze and all that. He did make our lives here better.

I'm not so sad (grieving) he died, but I indeed feel bad about it. He was a great entrepreneur and he changed a lot in our world, and that's what matters. I'm sorry for his family.

Now I think Apple might go downhill, he was really the motor behind their inventions.

I rarely found a CEO able to create such products, and he deserved more respect than that. Let's do not forget, we wouldn't have mouses for computers if he didn't came up with the idea...

I regretted buying my iPod touch a while ago, as it cost so much and doesn't even make a good music player - it's awful in fact. It has the hardware quality I expect from Apple, but it's all about the software.

Steve Jobs was inspirational, a genius really, and his early death is a severe blow to the computer industry and even the entertainment industry. He was an IT pioneer. I feel for his wife, who has lost her beloved husband, and she is still so young. My thoughts are more with her and her children than even Apple.

I'm with the Fool on the software issue - I am not interested in the iPad because I can't put my games onto it or my other software. Apple locks out users from putting anything but Apple-approved products onto their hardware. So what do users pay for? I'm waiting for the first real non-Apple iPad. One that I’ll use for MY stuff.

I don't know how Apple will do after Steve Jobs. I read that he put a succession plan into place, but it's now up to his colleagues to keep the momentum going. I doubt they will make the same mistakes they did before in becoming so moribund, but they will need to consistently provide real talent to stay competitive. We'll see.

Steve Jobs passed away. Um... Meh?

I'm all PC FTW, so whatever happened to Apple and its people are of no concern to me. The only Apple products I personally own is an old early 2000s iPod shuffle and a half-dead, even older iPod nano. Boo.

@gailp: could always just jailbreak the thing to make it more compatible.

I'm still waiting for any type of pad that can play games that need a much larger screen, keyboard, and a mouse ie Dragon Age/Mass Effect/Borderlands/etc.

What am I gonna do, shake the thing vertically to shoot an enemy and spin it to duck under an object? It's not a wii/kinect system...

Steve jobs' business practices rubbed me the wrong way & his fanboys were nauseatingly smarmy, but he sure was easy on the eyes in the 70s.

Very late reply, may not be seen. I did indeed try to gaolbreak my iPod touch, and failed. I did not have broadband at the time, or know I would need it. Using someone else's broadband did not help. I also read that iTunes, whose interface I loathed, had a habit of wiping users' data off their units for no apparent reason. Nasty.

Of course, it's a few years later and things may have changed. But I'm waiting for Samsung or someone to bring out a true iPad killer - a tablet-sized PC or Android, whatever, but of a decent size, not 7", which can be mounted as an external hard drive, which no Apple gadget can be. Bring it on.
