Hi,
I am not sure to choose between XP and VX. The problem is, I do not want to remake my game on VX for scatch! So tell me - is RMVX really worthier than RMXP? -RMXP combat scripts work with VX? -Characters can be compatible? -Are there any limitations to VX that didn't exist in XP?

-RMXP combat scripts work with VX?
No, they have a brand new of RGSS for VX called RGSS2. Its a whole new different script but the concept and effect are just the same. The scripters are now converting their RGSS scripts to RGSS2 to be compatible with VX -Characters can be compatible? As far as I know, if you put in a large graphic, rmvx will still counts it as a 4X4 grid character set. Know what I mean? But best use a VX graphics for rmvx -Are there any limitations to VX that didn't exist in XP? I think they brought back the vehicle system from rm2k/3 to vx. So there will be more options to choose from. The rest are just the same.

So it's pretty much XP with more features? Are events basically the same?

For me the answer is RMXP of course! VX RTP is really not as good as RMXP, though I like the facesets.XD

I've seen some of the characters and they look a little... um... squashed.

They look more to rm2k/3, similar to those games like FF4 and Ultima.
VX has features similar to rm2k/3 as well, just that you can use RGSS2 for additional features.

I saw - I have made a dummy project about it with VX.
So far, it is the same as RM2k3, but there is less ways to hack it (Haven't found a single pirate file on the internet, and all the translations are legal - even French . Those who really know me know what I did first to the program ). Therefore it is safer. Now for the core of the program, the RTPs are awful and I found no way to change the tileset. (And I use my MacknBlue RM2K files xD). Even with some good ideas toward beginners, the lacking combat system and bad graphics make RMXP better for a project, I mean, for an hardcore gamemaking lifestyler like me (who lives in his own Aveyond ambiance in real life and can pride to own a replica of the Sword of Shadows xD). Yet I am sure there is far more to explore with VX and will therefore keep on my dummy project - most certainly it will be a Pokemon-like game, with the Kirby-like RTPs. xD (Yeh, I was sarcasmic)

the RTP is AWEFUL. like people have said. their are are few pieces that look great, due to the upped color scemes, but other than that, the RTP isnt worth it. VX also only has two layers, while XP has three... most people dont notice because the VX system uses its layers idfferently, bu it still only has two. layering = impossible.

I know its awful, you don't have to use Caps Lock.
There's already lots of VX character template out there that you can use to make one from scratch. I think its best to create them yourself than to just keep on complaining how bad the RTP is. Check your typo, I can see that you're fast at typing.

Yes, you can always make up your own sprites...But still it's meant to be newbie-friendly, and me, as experienced gmae developer, has got difficulties finding features or understanding them (the layer most notabely).
Though, perhaps it's because I'm *not* a newcomer? When you are used to a high-level work (say, in math, solving problems with equations), you allways apply your skills to low-level work (solving a elementary-school math problem with equations). Still XP is quite worth better for now, as the price of VX is extremely ridiculous.

Anyway, if you had started any project in XP just carry on. Its not necessary to shift everything to VX.
First time I heard RPG Makers can be related with maths ![]()

I personally like the RTP in VX. It's really sleek. The facesets are great, too. I went to the artist's website that pretty much did all the anime artwork for VX.
I will be purchasing VX in the future. For now, though, the engine just came out, so I'm going to wait a while until all the bugs are out and there are lots of resources and support available by then. For now, I'm just concentrating on 2k3 and XP. Don't want to get overwhelmed to soon :p

I think RPG Maker XP is much better than RPG Maker VX, well, the graphics are better and there are more things to do, plus RPG Maker VX has two layers while RPG Maker XP has three, personally I don't know how to use 3 layers well, so just imagine two only.lol

humm xp or vx well i have both.. it all depends on what you want to do... i do not like the fact that all of the things that worked on xp do not work on vx so if i want to make a series of games with the same characters i can not switch it to vx which has better graphics. i am also able to do more with XP find easyer toolkits and stuff like facemaker works wonders on XP but faces on that wont work on VX so you are for now stuck with what they have.
i also have thought that vx is a bit more confusing because they combined all of the tile sets into one huge set so it is hard to tell what you are looking at till you start to build when XP each tileset is seperated to what you mostly want for a certin setting. i kindof think the ONLY featuers i like is in the event maker it is seperated and has labels that make it less confusing of what your makeing, and how the text box for diolog also has a face window which makes it easyer... so i say if u want easyer event makeing VX if you want easyer map makeing XP if you want to use a lot of tools and kits XP.. but maybe in 2 or 3 years VX will have many more toolkits and a converter from XP to VX but for now i am stuck with XP

I am aiming for a game that looks a lot like the Aveyond games, including that side-view battle thing. Which one should I go for? I also desperately want to combine tilesets without Photoshop.

Aveyond was made with RMXP, so that would be your better bet.
and you can combine tilesets in Paint, which comes with any windows computer. Side-view battle scripts are reletively easy to find. i know there are some on www.rmxp.org, or you could probably just google it.

How can you combine them? can you link me to a step-by-step tutorial? for paint?
I'm gonna try both...

I find it easier to use GIMP to combine tilesets.
You configure a grid of 32X32 so that you know the objects will look right on the map. You can copy and paste the existing tilesets into one set...or edit them and put them into your tileset.

the script for sideview battle system for xp and vx aren't the same
both graphics from vx and xp can be ripped to use at each other, there are some sort of converters out there in rpgVX tilesets are limited, but i've heard that there is already a way to add more tilesets. I'll say that vx is more beginner friendly, because i learned a easily from it than in xp, It's more organized too, what i don't like with vx is the default autotiles (i haven't tried experimenting to make my own), they look like a box, @pinkjaguar12 i used paint too before, i just copy paste everything and make sure that it is properly aligned. ![]()
