anyone ever gotten the "the device "generic volume" cannot be stopped right now. try stopping the device later" message when they try to remove their traveldrive?

if so, how do you fix it?

will it kill my traveldrive if i just take it out rather than "safely removing it" ?

i've backed up everything on it.

Oh, this happens to me sometimes. I usually try to stop it again, but if I can't then I just unplug it when the light stops blinking.

the light hasn't BEEN blinking. i've tried stopping it...lost count of how many times.

lol since you've backed the disk up, you can always plug it back in to check if anything's damaged

USB device drivers are "expected" to support the "Surprise Removal" message. If you are not in the middle of a continuous write request, you're safe to pull the plug.

But you might ask... why didn't the driver respond to the "shut-down" request? Oh, the reasons could be many... but I would certainly look to your hardware vendor site for a driver update... the odds are, if you're having the problem, you're not alone.

usually, it's ok to remove the flashdrive even when it's still lighted. as long as you finished all the transactions you made with it (i.e. copy/paste documents, open documents, etc.)

but if you want to be extra cafeful still, you could shutdown your pc before you remove it. sometimes flashdisks infected with a virus could cause that error.

well, it's alive now. it just scared the hell out of me that it wouldn't "safely remove hardware" the first million times i clicked it XD so i just pulled it out and it seems to work fine today. *knocks on wood* it's stubborn about certain computers--some don't read it, some claim there's something wrong with it, others like it perfectly well.

regarding a virus: actually, my computer once recognized a keygen for AcidPro4 on my flashdrive as a virus and deleted it >.< i'm positive that it wasn't a virus, but the program was being stubborn and not installing anyways XD
