I guess what Albus said about neglect doing more damage than outright dislike is true. Both Harry and Tom grew up as orphans with no idea of their magical identities, but look how differently they turned out. If only Merope loved her unborn son enough to live for him, instead of his arrogant father...

Yeah....I wonder how things would have been then...no scar...no voldemort...harry wouldn't be famous...he'd live with his parents...

@phoenix: there will probably be more baddies popping up. Voldemort was just the worst of them that we know of. Who knows, maybe someone would want to finish Voldemort's work and gather up an army again.

Remember that evil is already inherent in the society, as in the Malfoys, Lestranges, Crabbes, Goyles etc. They would be doing evil even without Voldy. Voldy just got them organised and with that organising amplified the power of evil that spread across the region. No doubt his superior intelligence and experimentation contributed a lot, but the evil has always been there.

voldemort's intelligence and power could have contributed a lot to society if used for the good of others... *imagines Voldy hugging Dobby/Kreacher/Winky..., as an auror voting for Bellatrix Lestrange to be shoved into Azkaban, as the head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, as hermione's mentor; encouraging her to campaign against muggle-haters and people who tease those who have superior intelligence.... okay i'm getting carried away now.*
but yes, even after voldemort's death; there was still a need of auror's etc. and as rowling herself said; voldemort cannot be the last dark/evil wizard; there would probably be others after him... though i don't think anyone as sinister as him for quite a long time....

but likewise i pity snape a lot too... if he remained a loyal person at heart even after being insulted, abused, and god knows what else from such an early age; imagine the sort of person he could've become if he had had a proper, nurturing childhood and loving, caring friends and family...

i find the little changes they make in the films very irritating. take for instance the new scene they've added in HBP, in which harry's flirting with a waitress. harry is the last person you'd expect to do that, but no, how can they make an entertaining movie without 'spicing up' the things a bit. as if it isn't 'spicy' enough; they are already projecting the movie as more of a teen romance than of voldemort's rise to power etc. it was the same in GOF; they accentuated the romantic bit a little too much and as a result more important or entertaining sub-plots were left out. like bagman, winky and SPEW etc. i know they may leave out other things but most of the time will never leave out any romantic bits so i was prepared for a bit of mushiness in this one but they've totally jumped the gun with the idea of harry and co. reaching their late teens and being more 'grown up' etc. this time, and i shudder to think what they'll do with the romantic scenes in the next movie...

but i guess before i rant more; i should see the movie first and then comment...

chimera, I totally agree about Snape. He could've easily turned out like Voldy too, except that, like Harry, he's got his own Uncle Vernon (in his own father, no less), and he had the fortune to fall in love with a pure girl like Lily. It's just too bad that he loved the Dark Arts more than Lily.

i don't think he loved the dark arts more than lily because he abandoned them because of her... i just think he couldn't understand why lily didn't share his fascination for them during their school years and thought of them as a means to show his power and impress her. especially after the way he was insulted by james; i think he knew that he was no match for him in any other area than the dark arts... and so continued with them...

sirius could've been biased... but i think it must be true. as for eileen marrying him; it must have been the same reason as merope: love. *sighs.*
well snape came from a witch's household, like ron, so he probablely knew a lot about magic. like magic was an everyday sort of thing at ron's and his family used a lot of spells everyday, snape had a slytherin background so those kind of spells could've been an everyday thing in his house... in fact his parents fought a lot so his mother could've used them on tobias as a demonstration... like i said he had a syltherin background so he could've found a lot of books containing those spells in his house and being a young child and mostly alone with nothing else to do, he'd have found those books a very entertaining means of passing the time... i don't think his mother ever bothered to explain to him about right and wrong or the fact that those were dark spells or were evil... i don't think she really cared about the sort of stuff he read and learnt and anyway she was a syltherin; she probabely wouldn't have found them so despicable after all....
all i'm saying is that snape had a very different childhood from lily or james and had no proper person to teach him the difference between things and you cannot expect a child of that age who has had no proper guidence in these matters to judge for himself the nastiness of those spells... you and i know that they are bad but he doesn't, he's grown up with them and is too familiar with them i.e. like a child who has raised a pet tiger from a cub not knowing it's dangerous and he wouldn't realize that no matter how much you tell him...

Hmm... I rather got the impression that Tobias is very like Vernon down to the anti-magic genes, so I don't think their household can be considered a witch's household. According to Snape's flashbacks, it's Tobias who seemed to be yelling at a cowering Eileen, not the other way around. And while we know Eileen's a pure blood, that's not an indication that she's a Slytherin (James and Sirius aren't ). Besides, not only did he study the Dark Arts, he actually invented spells (whatever else, you gotta admire his intelligence ). But yeah, he could've easily snuck among his mother's old books and self-taught himself (like with that old copy of the sixth year Potions book).

well yes i seem to have mistaken the house part... but i still assume that she was probabely from slytherin (the way her looks are described in the books and her being snape's mother...) but since i've got no proof...

i guess his house mightn't be considered a witch's (i was considering all the possibilities ) but his mother did argue back with his father... (i just re-read the entire 'prince's tale' chapter; it's mentioned there!)

well i guess i conclude that he wasn't innocent, he was indeed drawn towards the dark arts, but it was increased all the more because of whatever i said in post 115... but ultimately he remained a good person at heart and i admire him deeply for that...if only he had had a caring family...

My older sister goes to Harvard, and she just called and told me that Emma Watson was on their campus (she saw her and her "people", whatever that means) and is planning to go school there next year!
