See? Aveyond IS technically JRPG! The story is set in stone and you have to follow it no matter what. "Customizing the party's equipment" and the little choice we get in regards of pairings do not count.
@KTC: Yeah, obviously there's exceptions in everything. I guess you're right, KTC. JRPG is VN with more freedom in control. @binas: Both WRPG and JRPG are RPGs. They just have different feels. What the heck are you trying to say?

Aveyond would be a good example of RPG. Uh wth? Aveyond is an RPG, if not then what's it doing in the RPG section in the site? = = Or did you just forgot to type 'J' before RPG? You know, you really should proofread your posts before posting them. (8 Quote: Maybe JRPGs are just RPGs in Japanese form. Um isn't that kinda obvious? And what's the point of your post? Argoyle already explained it unless you actually don't read other people's posts.

@binas: Ditto Ivana. Why are you repeating the obvious that has been stated previously?

Just to reassure myself and others by simplifying. Sorry. But one thing I still don't get. Why is that there has to be 2 types?

The last one looks like it's all over the place and very disorganized. But 4 really? I guess I was not aware of that.

@binas: The chart is a joke about several popular RPG making companies. I'm sure there's more than four companies that make rpgs.
The last one is a very apt description of elder scrolls, a bethesda game. There's a primary plot, but there's so many side quests that you can easily go through hours right from the start without touching the main plot at all. Example: For Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, I didn't touch the main plot easily until the 3rd hour or so and by then, I had a very long list of side quests left to do.

I'm not sure I quite understand how the Nintendo RPG plot structure works. There's plenty of side quests that go nowhere?

@agas: pretty much. Pokemon = 1 plot and some side quests (gotta catch them all, getting a bike, etc.) that do not affect the main plotline.

I wonder where Aveyond would fall on that plot chart.

Nintendo imo.
There's side quests and only one plotline. While there are alternative endings, the games only follow one canon disregarding the rest.

Yep, definitely Nintendo. Most of the sidequests don't go anywhere and hardly affects the main plot. That is, other than some semi-important one that involves stuff you'd need for future quests. E.g pick lilies for William, who will give you a hat that you'll need to retrieve the map for the squirrells.

With that in mind, how does the side quests in the other two RPGs (Bioware and Bethesda) work? Seems that the side quests doesn't affect the flow of the storyline either, aside from (probably) giving you more exp, equipments, and other stuffs you might need later...

Just finished Love and War. While the plotline itself isn't some kinda guile machination (act II isn't out yet soooooo), the characters and atmosphere felt so real that you just can't help but be captivated by the game. The NPCs have names and you actually really talk to them instead of the typical accosting of "man" and "woman" with no face sets. Since you ARE living in the neighbourhood in your whole life, it makes sense to be acquainted with your neighbours.
There were some minor bugs in the game (mostly just the walking speed descreasing at some point) but nothing unfixable. Admiral Styles, the creator, seems to be going to make a revamp of act I, which will have better graphics and voice acting which doesn't actually suck so hurrah! 8D Ok, now back to being depressed and get myself to finish ABL and The Way....

@adept rogue:
Bioware: I've only played Dragon Age and ME where the side quests influence how you get to the ending. The overall ending (baddie gets beaten) is the same, but not the path to the ending. For example in ME, you can be a total homicidal jerk with no allies or a total saint with plenty of allies and this will affect how well you are off in the end. Hence why there are red/green loops to the black line. Bethesda: It's a bit misleading I guess. This is from playing Elder Scrolls: Skyrim It's more of an extreme version of a nintendo game. Yes the sidequests don't matter most of the time, but the sheer number of side quests will distract you. It's inevitable. I don't know anyone who plays Skyrim for the main plotline. No, we get distracted by the environment, the companions, the number of sidequests, the different guilds, the dragons, the number of abilities, the smithing, etc. Hence the green/red lines that will eventually lead back to the ending but it just takes a very long time to get there. Of course you can take the black path, but you're not really playing the game right as you miss out on a lot lol.
