Found this and decided to share it. Not sure if it is "officially" the longest word. I still think supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is cooler, but that's just me.

LONGEST WORD EVER!!!!!!!! (oops, I'm on caps lock)

That's a bit of a stetch to call it a "word" per se... but it certainly is long

...OMG that is long. But...seriously, is it even really a word? I really doubt it.

it's a scientific term- so... it's basically a word. At least it's not a random typo like '32947768gf bdjskkagfdkahsvkc' or something

...why would anybody make a word that long? Like, what's the POINT of it? Making scientists spend hours saying the term to each other and wasting time?

@sandstorm: IUPAC name is suppose to describe the molecule in question, which is Titin. They aren't restricted by size. They are good for moderately sized molecules because you know exactly what the molecule is made up of.

Other molecules like Titin makes their Iupac names very unwieldy so most scientists refer to them by their common name or chemical formula.

If you take Organic chemistry, this type of naming comes up a lot.

apparently without this molecule, every step we took would break our bones. it gives elasticity to our muscles, allowing us to walk and jump and do whatever and still have some "give", not just walk around like a bunch of puppets made of wooden beams.

ps: sorry about not posting in spm haven before. i was tired last night.

Holy! That is one very long chemical name for the common name Tintin, & it’s not really a word though.

Eh, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” isn’t a word.

They just used it in ‘Mary Poppins’ & it still made no sense lol.

Wow, that's a long word!
My friend told me what she thinks is the longest.
Pneumonoaltromicroscopicsyllavolcanoconeosis, which is some kind of disease that you get from the fumes of a volcano.
I still like
antidisestablishmentarianism, though.

@KTC: well, I still think the word is pointless. Who would waste their time memorizing it and using it?

@Sandstorm

Usually chemicals like that -like KTC said- are just called by their common names. It's useful to know since it tells you exactly what the molecule consist of.

@sandstorm: have you taken chemistry classes, particularly organic chemistry before?

Knowing a compound's IUPAC name is very helpful in determining its chemical components, structure, and properties.

For example, if I told you the compound was trans -1,4- dimethylcyclohexane, you would know its trans oriented with a 6 carbon ring and two methyl groups attached at the 1 and 4 position. From hexane, you can predict that its probably going to be not that reactive as its fairly stable.

However, for compounds with long unwieldy names as titin or with very common names like toluene, their iupac names are rarely used.

For example, if I told you that I drank dihydrogen-monoxide regularly, you'd probably think i'm drinking a poison, not water. Makes for great jokes though.

In conclusion, all chemicals get a Iupac name. It doesn't mean they will be used all the time.

@KTC: Umm, actually, no, I've never taken chemistry. So I really have no idea what the rest of your post is talking about. But if you say there's actually a logical reason for a gigantic name like this, I'll believe you...

Ah, no wonder. IUPAC is a international organization that gives names to compounds. Their purpose is to ensure that the person who hears or reads a chemical name is under no ambiguity as to which chemical compound it refers to: each name should refer to a single substance.

Titin happens to just be a really complicated one lol.

@sandstorm

Examples:
Some widely used:-

Common name - Chemical formula/name
Water - H2O
Oxygen - O2
Carbon dioxide - CO2

People can say-
“yo! Gimme water”

They can also go like-
“Can I have some H2O please?”

Even if you’re not aware of the reason behind the usage of chemical names for every common name, you must’ve heard these used at least a couple of times.

Tintin is just a common name (but not extensively known), and the ridiculously long name is its chemical/IUPAC one. (Which I don’t really get either)

And now why does every common name have to have a chemical name?

Cuz There are properties, formulas, rules, & reasons behind the formation of water, oxygen, Tintin etc. & by what, how, how much/many, it was made.

More importantly, Ya’ need to sit with a chemistry book, and a person who’s good at it, especially at organic/inorganic to actually get it through your brain – that’s what I did xD

@KTC,
dihydrogen-monoxide – isn’t it the same thing as H2O but sounds poisonous? lol

@lovinlife: yep, which is why it is a nice joke to play on ignorant people lol.

Me: "I drink dihydrogen monoxide."

Person: O_O "Wat? you drink monoxide? doesn't that stuff kill you?!"

XD
