It look liked the graphics of the first RPG that I have played, Legend of Legaia. Still, I prefer 2D RM games.

I think 2D bringsore charm to the game, and by the way the player is walking around on the map, I would say the controls aren´t that convenient lol
still a nice find though

Seems different. It doesn't look bad but could use a bit of pixel editing to smooth the rough edges. That's it. It doesn't look bad. It adds a whole new reality. But Aveyond like this is almost a no go. But for the game in that video looks suited for it.

Nobody mentioned Aveyond.
You canNOT edit the pixels to make it look any smoother. It's whatever the script does that makes it go all-3D that makes it look jaggy.Unless you tamper with the script, you can't smooth it out.

I've heard of Mode 7, but I didn't know THIS is what it was. The only 3D effects I've seen in RPG Maker looked like a flat surface with cardboard cutouts stuck to it in an upright position. I wasn't thrilled with it.
But this is completely different! How in the world do they do the mapping so you can change the camera view and see buildings from different angles? I'm amazed! It SO doesn't look like anything RPG Maker is capable of! If it wasn't for the blurring of edges of objects around the borders of the screen, I would be in love with this. I can see I'll have to stop hearing about Mode 7 and actually take a look at it myself!

@shaz: That is supposed to be something called the "H-mode7". It's like a new upgrade or something. I'm not sure if the demo is done purely with the scripts or with something else added on, but yeah... I was SUPER EXCITED when I saw the sample vid myself. It looked almost like the 3D stuff you do with higher-quality stuff, but a lot simpler. Iunno. I need to poke around with it some more myself too.

It uses bump mapping for the heights, so it looks like, in addition to your map, you've also got to provide at least one other graphic for every map you have, if not more.
The effect is awesome, though! I normally have no interest at all in 3D, but this looks like a perfect blend.

Odd. The script didn't mention any extra bump maps needing to be made. I guess I'll have to see for myself what is this all about...
EDIT: Oops, the bump maps are included in the demo. NEVERMIND ME.

I don't really like this, I agree with Ivanna, 2D all the way. This H-Mode looks just... kinda weird since the character and the trees still look 2D like, and other details like doors. :\

Yep, the bump maps are what gives it its 3D effect.
There's a LOT of extra graphics in there. The tilesheet for your map, the bump map that's associated with that tilesheet, and for every single tile on it that you could view in 3D (isn't just flat on the ground), a side view of that tile. Still, I think it looks great, and as long as it doesn't really blow out the project size like a true 3D game would, I would certainly do something with this. I would consider locking the camera though, so it still just follows the character and you can't change the angle.

Tsk, them narrow-minded people... can't wrap their minds around the idea of "improvement"....
![]() Kidding. @shaz: Hmm, hopefully there's instructions or helpful comments in the script about the camera. Seeing how far this went from the old cardboard-diorama-like look they used to have, maybe someday in the future someone can make this look REALLY epic-looking Kinda would defeat the entire point of RMXP, i.e making old-skool RPGs, but hey. Cheaper alternative to actually making full-blown 3D stuff.

Heh someone's a bit butt-sore coz everyone agreed with me. xD (well, except shaz lul)
Also aren't 3Ds mainly for MMORPG? And what Shaz said is right, if it really takes a huge space, I doubt people would download your game. Heh I bet people on RMN would have something to say for this. -v-

Anything that can help me cheat 3D is always good. I'm a wannabe game designer who for some really odd reason doesn't have the patience to learn 3D.
RMN? What's that? *does not understand abbreviations*

Hmm, the camera-locking thing reminds me of League of Legends. League of legends has a button that can allow you to lock/unlock the camera, and maybe some people want the camera unlocked, so a button would be right for it. But I'm not sure, having camera unlocked kinda spoils the fun because you can just explore some parts of the map without even going there, so yeah.

@agas: RMN.
I think it looks pretty good, considering this is done with a RPG Maker. ![]() But like everyone else here, I'm more for 2D anyway.

@Slimm: I suspected it's RPGMakerNet, but I can't be too sure
![]() Eh. If we really want to get technical, Original RMXP/VX/Ace does this 2.5D thing where it has the illusion of depth, but not quite. 2D is, what, side-scrollers like old Super Mario? At least that's what people say in Game Theory articles.

Oh wow... nostalgia. This looks a LOT like how I remember Runescape in its first couple of years. I think I discovered the game during its first few months out of beta 'cause there was one server and I never saw more than 40 people logged onto that server for quite a while. XD I still remember when there were only 5 quests. *shuts up 'cause she feels like a hipster -_-*
But really... this is an awesome idea; people are always wanting to play around with 3D and this gives them the chance to do so without having to spend the time learning how to do 3D models. Take it from someone who spent a couple of years learning how to make a mouth--not a face--a mouth. Without an instructor, learning on your own takes YEARS ZOMG. All of that said... I'm not sure that this route will aid in your project size dilemma for very long games. It will surely start out smaller... but depending on your game's length--I can imagine your project size could end up becoming LARGER than going with a dedicated engine and graphics.
