Logically-speaking, I did say I was expecting it to turn into a "bad ending", even back when I wasn't such a Gy/Mel shipper. Gyendal wins --> Mel is his slave/pawn/pet/whatever --> oh noes, the world is DOOMED!!!
Gy/Mel makes no sense, Gy/Stella makes even less sense, even I know that.

But seriously, it HAD a potential. If you guys had decided to make it happen and it's a Stockholm Syndrome kind of situation? It's interesting. And some of us DO want to see that kind of thing happen in future games. What's done in AV3 cannot be changed, but in the future you can take that into consideration.

Not-so-logically-speaking, it's author-intent that says Gyendal and Mel romance is not happening. What ends up showing on screen can be interpreted differently, just because there's only so much detail you can put onscreen without making the game text-heavy After all, Aveyonds canon pairings tend to be based on implied-interaction (see Ed/Stella and Dameon/Rhen). There's so many instances where I can insert GyMel shippery scenes without jeopardizing canon.

End rabid shipper rant.

And I'm not exactly hunting for shipping subtext per se, but I agree with D_A. Sometimes the writer allows two characters to have suggestive interactions- but although one (or both) parties have hidden/selfish/non-romantic motives to do so, such details can't really be shown on screen- and the viewers would probably interpret it differently.

About how I personally like my pairings... I'm honestly not certain how my brain works with shipping. I'm not overly excited with romance, and I loathe overly fluffy pairings. I tend to dislike canon pairings (or fan-preferred couples) for no real reason- despite the writer's attempts to avoid/parody normal pairing cliche. Sometimes I randomly ship two characters who doesn't seem likely to be a pairing, and sometimes they actually end up together for real. Sometimes I see another fan shipping unlikely pairing, and I just sorta go along with it.

@Kirroha: Same here. If the villain have to reform, or the hero becoming evil, the shift must not be too sudden like Dameon and Rhen in Aveyond 1. Their change of views/character should at least be implied through interaction with the other character or inner monologue.

You've probably already figured me out, but I love pairing people who would normally never get together. Opposites attract.

I like the idea of enemies ending up having a respectful relationship with each other, and keeping each other as friendly rivals. XD

@Rogue: Precisely. Otherwise the pairing is not so much a twist as it is a freaking troll. Take the Dameon/Rhen example. All we see is Rhen having a giggly crush over Dameon. The kind that wouldn't seem like the kind of love strong enough to make someone question their own beliefs in favour of that love. Dameon didn't even try to lure Rhen to the dark side, so... When it's time to make a choice, it's a no brainer that I don't want to join him.

With Spook, he isn't trying to turn Mel evil. He just wants to be on her good graces, so lack of real courting is understandable. The whole "I know better so I can help you in your travels" is enough for that particular plot.

I still stand by saying that Gyendal secretly has something for Mel isn't going against canon. The issue of her reciprocating is an entirely different matter, but one-sided interest on Gy's part is possible. See Te'ijal. Her idea of romance is blackmail and eternal torment. I can make a claim that Gyendal has a similarly twisted idea of what romance is, and him wanting to enslave Mel (he never said he wants to kill her) is HIS idea of courtship. and far as I'm concerned there's nothing to disprove me other than Word of God.

Especially when taken out of context. It doesn't help that the scene supposedly takes place in a tavern in a seedy slum section.

Rhen might be flattered to be treated with respect; but there's no depth in that, and there's not enough reason why she would switch allegiance for him.

Another thing, the characters' age and appearance also play an important role in how I like the pairings. Dameon, although about the same age as Rhen, looks almost three times her age- making the pairing look something like a pedo. Same goes with Serah and Snow from FFXIII. Just sayin'

Wellll, the James reference was because he's a bully (God knows how they ended up each other).

The very reason I'm more of DameonxRhen rather than LarsxRhen. I'm sure acting gentlemanly rather than call someone a DOG feels much better. And who cares about age in love anyways?

Though Lars only calls Rhen a dog in the very beginning before his character development and I believe he even apologizes for acting like a jerk which Rhen accepted. I mean, it's pretty much confirmed they've remained good friends even while Rhen's getting slavery abolished IIRC.

Dameon being a gentleman was akin to Gyendal's wooing of Mel. Red herrings seemingly abound in both cases though apparently only true in one of them.

And we're back to the old "Dameon is a gentleman and Lars is a jerk!!!" VS "But Lars changed! Dameon is just being fruity!!!" argument.

Other than that, yeah it's true. Dameon's gentleman act is like what GyendalSpook is doing to Mel: Fakey McFakerton to the max. At some point it turned into real feelings in Dameon's case, but... Same idea.

Age may not matter, but the development of the romance is totally herp-derp. It's only true because Word of God says so!

As for my comment: I meant that both Dameon/Gyendal only wooed the girls to use them for their plans.

So any attraction 'points' between Gyendal/Dameon and their respective girls were red herrings and only meant to distract.

Except apparently Dameon actually fell for his girl while Gyendal didn't.

Haven't exactly got the Lars ending which was newly added so don't know what he became after he 'sincerely' apologized to her.

And yeah, childhood romance is good. Something like Meteor's Garden romance is nice too.

@Ivana: Nothing. In the new Lars ending, Rhen and Lars went to Veldarah and became High Sorcerer and High Swordsinger. In the apology scene, Lars apologized and Rhen even says that she COULD like him. So. Yeah.
