Anyway, if you had started any project in XP just carry on. Its not necessary to shift everything to VX.
First time I heard RPG Makers can be related with maths ![]()

I personally like the RTP in VX. It's really sleek. The facesets are great, too. I went to the artist's website that pretty much did all the anime artwork for VX.
I will be purchasing VX in the future. For now, though, the engine just came out, so I'm going to wait a while until all the bugs are out and there are lots of resources and support available by then. For now, I'm just concentrating on 2k3 and XP. Don't want to get overwhelmed to soon :p

I think RPG Maker XP is much better than RPG Maker VX, well, the graphics are better and there are more things to do, plus RPG Maker VX has two layers while RPG Maker XP has three, personally I don't know how to use 3 layers well, so just imagine two only.lol

humm xp or vx well i have both.. it all depends on what you want to do... i do not like the fact that all of the things that worked on xp do not work on vx so if i want to make a series of games with the same characters i can not switch it to vx which has better graphics. i am also able to do more with XP find easyer toolkits and stuff like facemaker works wonders on XP but faces on that wont work on VX so you are for now stuck with what they have.
i also have thought that vx is a bit more confusing because they combined all of the tile sets into one huge set so it is hard to tell what you are looking at till you start to build when XP each tileset is seperated to what you mostly want for a certin setting. i kindof think the ONLY featuers i like is in the event maker it is seperated and has labels that make it less confusing of what your makeing, and how the text box for diolog also has a face window which makes it easyer... so i say if u want easyer event makeing VX if you want easyer map makeing XP if you want to use a lot of tools and kits XP.. but maybe in 2 or 3 years VX will have many more toolkits and a converter from XP to VX but for now i am stuck with XP

I am aiming for a game that looks a lot like the Aveyond games, including that side-view battle thing. Which one should I go for? I also desperately want to combine tilesets without Photoshop.

Aveyond was made with RMXP, so that would be your better bet.
and you can combine tilesets in Paint, which comes with any windows computer. Side-view battle scripts are reletively easy to find. i know there are some on www.rmxp.org, or you could probably just google it.

How can you combine them? can you link me to a step-by-step tutorial? for paint?
I'm gonna try both...

I find it easier to use GIMP to combine tilesets.
You configure a grid of 32X32 so that you know the objects will look right on the map. You can copy and paste the existing tilesets into one set...or edit them and put them into your tileset.

the script for sideview battle system for xp and vx aren't the same
both graphics from vx and xp can be ripped to use at each other, there are some sort of converters out there in rpgVX tilesets are limited, but i've heard that there is already a way to add more tilesets. I'll say that vx is more beginner friendly, because i learned a easily from it than in xp, It's more organized too, what i don't like with vx is the default autotiles (i haven't tried experimenting to make my own), they look like a box, @pinkjaguar12 i used paint too before, i just copy paste everything and make sure that it is properly aligned. ![]()

| RPG Maker... XP or VX? | #21 | ||||||||||
|
|||||||||||

I've been thinking about getting RPG Maker, the problem is that I don't know what version to get. When I read comments about the different versions it seems like XP is a better choice over VX. Unfortunately I don't have any facts to back that up. It also seems to me that there is more information and help out there for XP. At the same time, VX is the more recent version, which usually means the better version. (Though that's not always the case.)
So, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

We choose XP due to the resolution... but miss out on some of the new features of VX as a result.
What you may want to do is write down what is important for your usage and compare the two products based on your needs. If you're unsure of your needs... I'd take XP, if for no other reason than the vast array of support for it.

Thanks.
I'm planning on using my own sprites and facesets. Should that affect my decision in any way?

Well I think you should pick XP I did and I'm gonna make a game that's a like bit like all the aveyond games.I mean that I think that aveyond games aren't just battle and quest games I think their a combonation of battle games, quest games, and romance games.When I played Ahriman's Prophecy I thought that their was a love connection between Deven and Talia.When I played Aveyond Rhen's Quest I thought there was a love connection between Lars and Rhen.When I played Aveyond Ean's Quest I knew there was a love connection between Ean and Iya.When I played the magic orb series in the aveyond games I knew that Mel loved Edward and Edward loved Mel.Their is a love connection in every aveyond game and I think I just found out what the series of games I'm gonna create will be called.I think it'll be called When Love And Hate Are The Same As Magic.The first in series will be called When Love And Hate Are The Same As Magic:When The Forest Talks To Us.I know who the most important main characters will be too.Miranda Lourath and Hythrando Itmolthoy.
So here is the storyline to When Love And Hate Are The Same As Magic:When The Forest Talks To Us.First Miranda Lourath and Hythrando Itmolthoy are born they are born at the exact same time right down to the second.

Lilith: this is the debate thread. you should start a thread of your own about your game in the Homemade Games: In Progress forum.
![]() KK_Twain: personally, i find it easier to make graphics for XP, but that could be because that's what i started with. it's all a matter of personal preference--which style of graphics do you like more? (Also, there's no law saying that you MUST use RMVX-style facesets with RMVX. i've used them with XP--you just have to split them up into single facesets)

There should be an English version for both RMXP and RMVX.
http://tkool.jp/products/rpgxp/eng/ http://tkool.jp/products/rpgvx/eng/index.html Personally I prefer RMXP, but that's simply because I've been using it for years and know my way around the event functions almost with my eyes closed. Also, I can't sprite and I really don't like the new sprites in RMVX (which is what I'd have to use). As has been said before, there is loads of support available for XP along with hundreds of scripts! If in doubt I'd say download both and try them out. RMXP comes with a free 30 day trial, so I assume RMVX does as well.

I really disliked RMVX, frankly speaking. This is one reason why I didn't play most of the games made in RMVX.
Reason Number 1: Mapping Sucks, plain and simple, you have to be able to solve a Rubix Cube in 5 seconds to make a decent map on this crap platform. Reason Number 2: Lack of attention, not many likes RPG Maker VX, the only games I've seen for it, are noob games that suck, HARD...Don't believe me? Google RPG Maker VX Games Reason Number 3: RGSS2 Sucks, RGSS was fine, I don't understand why you would add RGSS2 as well as make the rest of the platform more simplified. It would be intresting if Enterbrain added more features instead of removing them!!?! But by changing a few lines of codes they still made quite some money. Hey, for them it works right?

heimdall: all righty, since this is a debate (even though i'm physically incapable of playing RMVX games XD), i'm going to challenge just about everything you just said. (i feel obligated to do this, since one of my best friends uses VX, and i feel that i can't say that "all" VX games are useless because he has cool stuff and--for the most part--makes the mapping work.)
1. Mapping The autotile-/two layer-based system drives me completely nuts. two layers + events is not enough layers--i have a hard enough time with three layers + events XD BUT, i must say that ZB (my friend) has done some pretty remarkable stuff with it. i think more than the mapping, it's the graphics in general that drive me nuts. the sprites...*shudders* the sprites. 2. Attention to Detail, etc. it's completely unfair to say that RMVX games don't have storyline/attention to detail. that's an issue with the game makers, not the program. i've seen some fail games with RMXP, too. (will remain nameless, partially because i can't remember what they were) 3. RGSS v. RGSS2 being it that either way, i avoid scrips like the plague, i have very little opinion on this. again, i think it's what you've done before. ZB swears that RGSS is complicated. i think it looks like gibberish either way XD most of this is based on ZB Darkflames games. hopefully he'll appreciate the advertising XD http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=29641&hl= http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=4381&hl= http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=20679&hl= http://www.rpgmakervx.net/index.php?showtopic=475&hl=
