@KTC: I think Ivana is referring to the manga called Nononono. One of the central plot point includes the female lead having to pose as her deceased twin brother to become a ski champion, because females aren't allowed to participate in the Olympics- or so they say.

@Ivana: Anyway, I was more bothered by how Yuuta's burned body can be identified as Nono's, that she can actually roleplay as him. Since male and female have different bone structures, the coroner/forensics must be impossibly stupid to make such mistakes. Besides, there are no such thing as half-identical twins! Well, identical twins with different genders are genetically possible, but then they would not have the exact same appearance because the female counterpart will suffer Turner's syndrome due to incomplete chromosomes. I don't know why authors like to insist that male-female identical twins are possible, and I won't mind if it was a negligible detail. But when it becomes one of the major plot point, well... That's an entirely different case.

Though that whole identical boy/girl twin things does NOT make sense. Females have XX, males have XY. A simple DNA test would confirm this. Barring that, you can look at the bone structure of a corpse to tell if it's female or male. If the teeth are still around, you can look at dental records.

I don't remember much, but maybe most of the bones that can determine whether it was female or male got burnt so since she claimed to be his brother, they just got along with it? I didn't chose biology so I'm not knowledgeable about those stuffs. ._.

That would mean the burning would have to be at an unnaturally high temperature (ie crematoriums) to shatter bone. Not realistic under normal circumstances I think.

Also, I find it unreasonable that the entire pelvis/hip region of the skeleton is destroyed so completely enough they can't identify sex correctly.

Regarding twins, identical twins should not have the same gender because they are essentially from a single zygote that later splits into two different beings, so they have the exact same genes, DNAs and chromosomes (which also sets the children's gender). However, there are some extremely rare cases when, during the splitting, the Y chromosome of one child is not transferred to the other, so the second child will have an XO chromosome- making her genetically female. However, having 1 less chromosome than the standard amount, the female twin will suffer from turner's syndrome.

Well, I read an article about how it IS possible to have different gendered indentical twins, if the initial zygote have an XY chromosome and the Y chromosome did not transfer to the second child during the splitting. It's very rare, though.

In my understanding, identical twins are produced when the zygote undergo a process similar to mitosis. Knowing that mitosis happens by the two centrosomes pulling appart the chromosomes towards opposite sides. I think it would make sense if, during an imperfect separation, one of the chromatids did not make it to the other side and is lost when the cell splits.

Coming back to the topic on mangas, I actually found this bit of info about twins in one Detective Conan chapter. Now Gosho don't usually include made-up scientific facts, so I decided to look it up and found some confirming articles.

I've been reading a bunch of one shots cuz they are short and I don't feel like committing to any long series right now.

Well, it's not a really new series, but I've been watching Durarara!! anime lately. It's based on a light novel, and had also been published as manga (unfortunately, the mangas seemed to lack updates/is on hiatus, so I had to watch the anime instead). The plot lacks actual genre, and the overall concept is rather... unique, despite the relatively realistic setting.

That's what I liked about it though, the series's story is very atypical.

I've been hearing about Durarara from my friends. I gave up after a few chapters though.

Well, I've been watching Mirai Nikki. The anime should be finished in the next or next few episodes! ^^

Oh and I think Skip Beat has a chinese (taiwan?) live drama series. GOD THE MAIN CHARACTERS LOOKS HORRIBLE!! Blegh. Even Meteor Garden's 'Sanchai' looks better than her. (Kudos to anyone who's seen MG.) +o(

It's not bad but well, I still prefer the anime.

I'm still following Saiyuki. The artist just recovered from a major surgery, so updates are going to be slow, but she's back.

Sanzo-ikkou is on the mountain, gets altitude sickness, then finds the guardian of the Koten Sutra, the last of the 5 holy Sutra. Sharak Sanzo is as crazy-edgy as Genjo Sanzo is, and looks even more psycho because she is a woman. Because edgy ladies look scarier than men who do and look exactly the same. Woohoo.

Also, some hints that something is up with Nataku, Li Touten, and the Saiyuki Gaiden peeps. How all that is not just there for the lulz, but also related to the current story. Or something.

Weeeelll, how real of a woman is she is up in the air for guesses right now, but yeah. For now she's identified as a woman. Her bangs are covering her forehead, so we can't even tell if she's a "chosen" Sanzo or a rogue one like Ukoku.
