Have anyone tried more of Angie Sage's books like:
Araminta Spook Series?

I seriously love them!

Araminta Spook? What.... a... weird... name I'm now getting a weird mental image of Spook wearing a dress performing in an opera, 'scuse me
*headdesk*

That aside, I looked up the series and I actually have seen the books. Except that I never paid attention to the title so I didn't know what the books were called. Looks like something that I would like. I like funny not-at-all-horror kids's books. Sometimes these little kids books are a hell lot better-written than books written for older audience *coughthosecrappyTwilightknockoffs*

Heh, I was like that at first but the contents are good.

This is the first book I've read in her A.Spook Series!

Try it.

Meroko, it's Araminta Spookie, not Araminta Spook.

Anyway, I noticed mentions of those in the Sep books. I might try them.

Hmmm I don't know any of the books mentioned above, but has any of you read "The Dwarves" By markuz Heitz?

It's a 4 book long trilogy Ok quadrilogy. It's a bit like lord of the rings, but in this story, it is another little race that has the task to save the world from the Darkness. Not the Hobbits this time, but the dwarves!!

The book really is filled with lore, and tyhe author really knows how to create his personages.

Now that he has finished the story trough tyhe eyes of the dwarves, he is rewriting the whole thing, but in the perspective of the Alfar (think drows), the bad guys of the Story!!

yannes - that sounds interesting. I will check tht out. I recently read a great book by L.E. Modessitt Jr. called The Magic Of Recluce. I read it years ago, and loved it and I just re-read it. The only thing I find to be difficult with it is that it is told from the first-person point of view, and I always have trouble getting past that. Once I got into it I found it to be very engrossing.

I'm getting around catching up on the Skulduggery Pleasant series. I'm behind by 3 books >.< As a hardcore Valduggery shipper, I'm so sad that at some point in the series Valkyrie started dating Fletcher. I'm not buying any more of the books until Val and Fletch break up LOL I'm so weird.

I'm also hearing that in the movie version Johnny Depp will be playing Skulduggery. Some say it's just false rumour and the movie is not even in plan yet, but if it's true then SQUEE!

I've been reading A Game of Thrones (the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series). It's intense. And violent. And has quite a lot of sex. But it's actually really good. I'd definitely recommend it to a MATURE reader, and someone who doesn't get squeamish at the thought of incest, rape, and a ton of gore.

I read 'A Game of Thrones' when it first came out, and enjoyed it quite a bit. This week I am reading a book from my own early reading years, called 'Swords and Deviltry' by Fritz Lieber.

The stories that comprise the book were written in the 1950s and 60s, and are probably too prosy for most readers nowadays, but they were the tales that modern fantasy such as Dragon Lance and Dungeons and Dragons got their start from. The stories were gathered together and published as Swords and Deviltry in 1970, which is when I read them as a high-school junior.

The stories all began life as short-stories in sci-fi magazines beginning in 1957, and chronicle the adventures of Fafhrd the Barbarian and The Grey Mouser. They are larcenous, and violent; just perfect in my opinion! They too have a certain amount of adult content.

A Game of Thrones? I saw a TV series based on that book being advertised. Maybe I should check it out.

The series is based on the book, but I haven't seen it. I don't watch TV lol! But the book is well worth reading. It has some gritty moments, and it is rather violent; but I think it is a great book.

I've moved on to the second book in the series, A Clash of Kings. I find it quite a bit less interesting, unfortunately. My favorite character only has five chapters in the entire book, and the characters I don't like have too many. Meh. It's still enjoyable enough; I'm just hoping that the third book, once I get to it, holds my attention better.

Less than one month now! Only ~25 days until MASTIFF comes out! *squee*

:.:.:

Although... I'm not sure where I'll be able to buy it... I'll have to order it online. Why did Borders have to close?

I read the most recent Percy Jackson book. The series is not the best written, and the plot is recycled (he has a formula that he's managed to use on every one of his books except for ONE), but they're extremely fun reads and the characters are very entertaining. This one is perhaps not worse than the others, but my problem is that the characters from the previous one are missing and, when they're about to FINALLY meet up, the book ends. It's ridiculous. And annoying. And I have to wait a year for the next one. I am NOT HAPPY.

Percy Jackson... Eh, I feel like it has myth-fail aplenty, so... I wasn't too keen on reading it.

I mean, whut, since when is Poseidon the oldest of the big three? Hades is the oldest! Minor details like that bug me to no end and irks the hell out of me >.< Also, why is the story arc too similar to Harry Potter?

*sigh* I like myths and their adaptations, but so far I haven't found any that I like.

This last Sunday Rick Riordan was in Olympia Washington and spoke on the craft of writing and just a lot of things in general. He was hysterically funny and had a lot of great advice. Percy Jackson grew out of bedtime stories for his 8 yearold son, which I thought was interesting.

Personally, I like new twists on old mythologies. There are so many different versions of every sort of mythology that nothing is really set in stone as to who came first. I enjoyed reading the Percy Jackson series, myself.

Books really are a personal choice though. I didn't care much for the Twilight thing, and a lot of people seem to really love that.

I didn't think that it mentioned Poseidon's age anywhere in the books, but maybe that's just me.

Anyway, I agree with connie: I like the new twists. Rick Riordan's gods and monsters come alive in a way that the original myths never do. I've always liked Greek mythology, but the stories always seemed so sterile to me; they lacked any sort of heart, and the Percy Jackson series made the stories a lot... warmer.

But yeah, the story arc is extremely similar to HP. There's a smart girl, a heroic guy, and a comic relief sidekick. There's a Snape-type character who is then revealed to be not so bad because he's in love or something, and the author seems to have taken to heart J.K. Rowling's strategy of increasing the number of deaths each book. I don't mind so much, because I still find the books entertaining, but I can see why that might be a valid complaint.
