Over Sea, Under Stone was written by Susan Cooperand is part of The Dark Is Rising Sequence of books.

If you enjoyed reading Over Sea, Under Stone perhaps you'll enjoy the other Dark Is Rising books:
The Dark is Rising (book 2)
Greenwitch (book 3)
The Grey King (book 4)
Silver on the Tree (book 5)

Is there a movie based on the set of books? Yes. It's called The Seeker and was made in 2007.

PLOT:
The Drew children Simon, Jane, and Barney find an old map in a hidden room while summering at the Grey House in Cornwall. Along with their Great-Uncle Merry, they become embroiled in a web of intrigue that surrounds an Arthurian legend. (taken from Amazon.com)

It's been a long time since I've read this book, I vaguely remember it, but I remember enjoying it. Maybe I'll read it again. I had no idea it was part of a series. Or maybe I did and I forgot that I did.

This is actually in my opinion the weakest book of the series. The second and fourth books actually were Newberry Award Honor/Winner books and the plot gets much more interesting later. This is sort of the intro book which sets the premise, but doesn't get too deeply into the actual good/bad conflict and motivations.

It is pretty derivative of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe aside from the King Arthur elements. The rest of the series is actually much more inventive. I actually remember the later books as rather scary or dark (it's been a long time since I read the other ones). The Arthurian ideas are really rather good.

The figure of Great-Uncle Merry is my favorite. I love scholarly figures and he, of course, is the most in touch with what is really going on in the story. This book makes him a bit of a secondary character and a little "Indian Jones-like", but since it pre-dates the movie, maybe it's the movie which is derivative .

Once I finally got around to reading the book, it only took me two or three days. I liked it very much!
I'd have to say my favorite character is Jane, just because I can relate to a lot of her theories and ideas. xD
Does that sound odd?

Ohh, thanks for that bit of info, ljspence. ^^
I think I'll have to see if my library has more of the books from that series. It sounds like a series I'd be interested in.

I think I really liked the book because I'm really into mythology and stories like that. I've always liked the stories of King Arthur, and this book really painted a good picture of how things may have turned out in that situation.
I also like Gumerry. He was a great character!
So enigmatic! He sort of reminds me of someone... but I can't put my finger on it. >.>

And, referring to the discussion starters, I probably would've done exactly what Simon, Jane, and Barney did. Maybe not if Great Uncle Merry wasn't there, but you get my point.
I generally like dealing with things on my own, oddly enough.

All in all, it was a good book
and I definitely wouldn't mind reading the next book in the series, eh? ^^

I just recently received the book from the library and was impressed with the way the author incorporated the ideas of the Arthurian lengends with a 'modern' family vacation.
Each character seemed to have some chractaristics people associate with the heroes and knights of those times.

I think reading the rest of the series should be enjoyable.
