Hey all,
I can't remember if I had posted here before or not. I vaguely remember reading posts here ages ago when Mae started the thread...anyway, I'll try to join in the fun Will start with an intro on myself ![]() I personally can read, write and converse in 4 main languages (in order of most fluent to least): English, Mandarin, Malay, Japanese I know Cantonese but I'm not confident in writing it as I'm not sure if some words appears as how I speak them they seemed different on the canton subs on HK drama ^^; Learning how to listen, understand and speak "Hokkien" as my workplace is predominantly Hokkien speaking community. As for Japanese Kanji, I may not always be able to read as in pronounce them out, but I'm able to understand some of them by guessing what it mean based on "Chinese Kanji" (Traditional characters) All in all, English remains my primary language as everything else is in a "confused" state due to my bringing up. I live in Malaysia, a multiracial, multicultural, multilingual country. My education history (in terms of language medium) is a bit "messed up": Kindergarten and younger - English educated (ed.) Primary/Elementary - Chinese Ed. Secondary/Highschool - Malay Ed. Tertiary/College & Uni. - (back to) English ed. So I practically have to relearn everything in each education stage ^^; What on earth did I put myself through? @KTC LOL at the Cantonese phrases. We Chinese used them quite often. Goodness! We make ourselves sound so barbaric xD @daeva_agas I think I'm sleepy or something cause I somehow read "Gao Xue" as "High Blood (Pressure)" ("Gao Xue Ya") ![]() No wonder I couldn't make any sense until I read the next line xD

@Elie: LOL, that's why... I've pretty much forgotten how to speak mandarin/chinese. I'm not even sure if that's right or not.. I can understand bits and pieces when I hear people talk in Chinese but I can't say anything back

Tonality and stuff, right? And how the pronounciation do not match the spelling. "k" is read in a "kh" while "g" has a "k" sound in Chinese/Mandarin. Ugh.

Yeah,
that's happened to japanese too, as the romanji of v is b, i suppose? But it's rather fun to learn them

@shadowshed: It's not that the romaji of "v" is "b". The Japanese do not have "v" sound in their language, so they substitute "v" with "b" because they sound similar. e.g. vampire = banpaiaa in katakana ["n" before consonant is pronounced "m"].
Yeah, Japanese is easier than Chinese because they don't have the tonality and stuff. I mean, with chinese, same word with different tonality means totally different things. At least with Japanese we only have words that sound the same but means differently and the "same writing different reading different meaning" thing (homophone? Homonym?). Chinese have those two AND the tonality thing. That's annoying.

@agas: yes, it's more like similar sound when pronounced, with another one like 'n' sometimes sounded like 'ng'.
But still, i got that romanji is something like words pronounced, so that can be a similar way. And same with you, it's rather hard to me to understand how to speak chinese with it's tone correctly. And maybe it's with homonym, homograph, or homophone.
