Hello. This is the place to come if you are interested in languages. Amaranthia is a culturally and linguistically varied community, where people speak dozens, if not hundreds of languages. This club is dedicated to those languages.
Keep your eye on this first post, more info to follow. If you want to be a member of this club, post here, or just read what others have posted. It's a very open club. When we get more established, we might get together some language groups and then we can talk more about memberships. One thing to remember, though, is that the language of this forum is English, so discussion in other languages should be accompanied by an English translation. This club is more about talking about language, learning other languages (and maybe a bit about your own) and learning about all things related to language, not so much about speaking in tongues. ![]()

I was about to create that club here too, since I've begun a thread about that some times ago in DL Headquarters, but nobody seemed to be interested in, except Oracle ![]() At first it was more specific between French and English but in fact, there was no limit ... just to let you know what I've put there ![]() Quote:

This club seems like a great idea. Would it be an appropriate place to bring something that needs translating/pronouncing?

The first idea about that kind of thread came to us from a "misunderstanding" about our motto in DL's
"Know Dragons, No Fear" Then I was asking ... Quote: but there is no correlation with the fact that we and our dragons are "linked" together... I mean, it's not only the fact to know dragons, which provides the fact not to have any fear, it's the fact that we are "linked" with them, no ? and Oracle answered me that Quote: Cat, the word 'know' is synonomis with the words below which do convey that kind of relationship. To 'know' Jesus, or to 'know' your mate indicates a very intimate relationship. It is that context I was looking at with the motto. Only you can 'Know'Dagondux. Only I can 'Know'George. So I was looking for these translations afterwards ![]() to know = savoir, in the sense of "I know my lesson" or "in this situation, I know what the truth is" to below = appartenir, in the sense of "I below to the DL guild" or "I below to the human species" then, regarding the verbs above, no one can really express the same meaning as "to know" in French Associate = associer Cognize = découvrir (given by Oracle because I didn't find the word in my dictionnary Cognise is to know/see for the first time - for example : someone shows you a picture of someone you have never seen before)Discern = discerner Distinguish = distinguer Experience = apprendre Fathom = comprendre, saisir Grasp = comprendre, saisir Identify = identifier Ken = not a verb in my dictionary Profess = really different meanings in French : prétendre, confesser, professer, se prononcer Realize = réaliser Recognize = reconnaîre (which is something very different of “know” it’s more like “I haven’t seen her for such a long time, that I almost didn’t recognize her, she’s become so tall”) See = voir Understand = comprendre Hope it fits to what you're waiting here ? ![]() if not, I can delete it, just let me know ![]() And if you need any help for translating anything in French, don't hesitate to PM me, I've already done that for some friends here ![]()

I'm afraid I don't know the French translation but I might be able to help with the word Ken. It's Scottish dialect (Scotland being one of the countries that makes up the UK).
A common phrase using it might be "I dunnae ken" which means "I do not understand". In this case the dunnae = do not and ken = understand. But it would also be equivalent to the phrase "I do not know". So in that context ken = know. I hope that helps or maybe I've just confused the issue more ![]()

thanks for the informations elm
![]() In fact, the explanations about the "know" problem have been given by Oracle some weeks ago I just posted the "dialogues" there so that you can understand why I was looking for so many translation about verbs ![]() But it's good to know different ways of saying things ![]()

I have some poems written by my great-grandfather that are in Swedish but I have no idea what they say. Could someone translate them if I post them (assuming that I can read his handwriting)?

Don't you mind putting them here to share with us ? ![]() @Moony, so do I ![]() I remember when I was 17, I tried to learn Russian all by myself, but I hadn't much money and couldn't afford the tape, just the book... ![]() after a while I had to stop because some langages are really impossible to learn if you don't hear them too ...
