Wasn't Pirates of the Carribean movie made because the producers wanted to rake in money based on a DisneyLand ride? Even if there's a book, it's probably based on the movie, and not the other way round.

KTC said POTC was confusing so yeah, it's POTC, not LOTR.

I don't live in the US. Don't know anything about the Disneyland thing there T_T

POTC was made after a ride in Disney, not from books. The makers may have published books after the movies released, but the movies were not based on them.

@Mopiece
Whut? That's kinda lame tbh. The movie was still good nonetheless. I knew the the books came after, I just didn't know it was based on a ride.

Why is it lame that it's based on a ride? Not only is the ride amazing (it IS), but it has little bearing on the movie and doesn't really change anything.

Well, Disney once had a "make movies inspired by rides" spree. They did one on Haunted Mansion, and another for Pirates. Haunted Mansion tanked and failed, but Pirates was so unexpectedly successful that Disney decided to go make sequels, as per your Disney usual.

You can't fault Disney for making sequels because the first Pirates was successful. Any other movie producing company would have made a sequel too. That's just how the movie industry goes.

Only the sequels usually suck because they're not planned out properly. As was previously mentioned, unless the movie is supposed to be a series, most sequels are bad because the producers don't really care about the stroyline now that the product have an already strong fan base. Even if the movie is based on a serial novel, they could *still* somehow mess up the sequels.

'Kay, so I just went to see Snow White. Considering how many people didn't like it, I am surprised that I liked it. It's like Breaking Dawn. I pretty much sat there thinking "Okay, hurl your worst at me", and I watched it and I came out thinking "Hey, that was kinda cool actually".

I'm totally going soft.

There's herp derp moments, like how Snow White is all "Raaah fight!" even though she had no fight training previously beyond that one quick self-defense session with the Huntsman (he has no name, you suck, movie). And her motivational speech is SO CHEESY. I was also meh about the ugly evil brother. I mean, dang, I know the Ravenna is pretty mostly because of magic and stuff, but come on... Bad = ugly is lame forever. Also her name, Ravenna? Har dee har har. So clever.

I appreciated that Snow White just went and became queen without hooking up with anyone. Like, back with Princess Diaries princess Mia ditched her wedding, but still kinda went and got together with Nicholas. This one... she just became queen. Though there IS implication that there's some, er, "spark" going on with her and the Huntsman. It's minor, but it's there. 'Cept that the acting ain't great and I don't really see the chemistry between anyone. I absorb the implication through understanding of context and logic. Not because the acting shows it.

It was lame, though, that she was holding this flowering branch and just held it there all stiffly. She was wearing this "Yeah, I guess this happens. Okay?" expression. She COULD, like, lift up the branch to show that she's determined or enthusiastic. But nope, it's Kristen Stewart and she's well known to act like a wooden mannequin Unless the director is the one who thought lifting up the branch is cheesy and specifically told her not to.

Well... the thing with Snow White and the Huntsman is that the trailers and plot summary ("Huntsman decided to train Snow White rather than killing her; yadda yadda") gives the impression that there would be a lot of training sessions and battles with monsters and the like.

The fact that we saw almost none of the action promised, and the characters spent a good deal of the movie running around aimlessly reduces a good deal of my interest.

@Rogue: I too at first expected it to be action and fights and battle training when I first saw the trailers. That was a few months ago. Then, a few days ago, I read the reviews. Since then I've been steeling myself to expect this to be less action and more drama, so that's why I didn't get bummed too much.
-----------------------------------------
Also, the lamest thing happened when I was watching the movie. The movie froze up, stopped playing, and the lights turned back on. Apparently since I was the only audience the movie operator thought nobody was in and turned off the movie. I came out, complained, and they were sorry and stuff. I totally should've demanded for a free bag of popcorn or an extra drink for the problem

Did I mention that I thought Kristen looks very much like Katniss in the movie poster?

BTW, does the Huntsman have a name? Fanfiction.Net section (It has an FFN directory already, so fast!) and Wikipedia listed his name as "Eric/Erik", but the movie credits and IMDB just called him "the Huntsman".

You were the only audience? O.o The cinema must be pretty deserted...

re Huntsman's name: It's probably something the writers/producers revealed in an exclusive interview or something. Didn't JK did the same thing regarding Harry and co's future career and stuffs?

It was very deserted. NOBODY WAS THERE beside a couple watching a different movie in another room and the staff. Then again, it's summer and it's a university district. People normally are: partying all night and dead-tired by the day, off holidaying elsewhere, taking summer classes (UW summer course has started, AIS' have not), or doing some outdoor activity.

Anyways, yeah... you're right. Maybe if I poke around online I can find something.

Just finished watching "The Woman in Black" yesterday. And really loved the ending; meaningful yet psycho.

Finally watched MIB 3 last night. Cool action, OK humour, overall better than Avengers IMO. Had some unexplained plot holes, but for once I don't mind...

And apparently, "small" popcorn in the cinema I went to is about the size of a 150g cereal box, and that was the first time I didn't manage to finish the popcorns before the movie starts.

That was my first reaction when I first got myself a "small" popcorn bag here in USA. I was all "THIS is small? How big is "large", then?" (it was about a quarter of a rice sack)

Ooooh. Watched MIB3. I loved it. I didn't really like MIB2, I didn't have expectations for MIB3, but IT ROCKED! MIB1 was awesome, though.

Hmm, I wanna watch Snow White ... Not sure if I will or not. The reviews here don't necessarily sound nice. And what about Brave? How is it?

Didn't watch previous MIB movies, so I didn't really know what to expect- except for the existence of aliens and probably science fiction-y stuffs, along with all sort of ultra-high-technology gadgets. The reception I read from Wiki wasn't very high, but I had enjoyed MIB3 more than some other movies with higher ratings (The Avengers, for instance). Though the reason I like the movie so much is because I'm currently in love with timey-wimey stuffs (probably influenced by Final Fantasy XIII-2, but whatever) and cool vehicles and technology.

About Snow White... I don't really recommend it. None of its supposed genre were played out properly that it's boring. The whole plot seems to be about Snow White being imprisoned and then running around to all directions while escaping the Queen. The action, the dark/gothic theme, the romance... they don't impact the story much, apparently. Their half-hearted execution makes the movie really bland.

Brave isn't released here yet, apparently, so I'll make no comments. I'm more interested with The Amazing Spiderman, though; the trailer seemed so cool.

(@d_a: I realized that food portions in USA is generally larger than what I'm used to since I bought that McDonald's meal, so I won't be too surprised about that. Singapore, on the other hand... well, they're usually stingy about these kind of stuffs that I expect them to hand over something really small. But apparently, I was wrong)

I went to watch Brave. It's good an I enjoyed it, but I'm surprised I have little to comment about it. It's got plenty of funny moments; the environment and character renders are WONDERFUL and pretty, but it's kinda expected from Pixar; THE MIDGET BEARS ARE SO FLUFFY AND CUTE!!!!

I was really bothered by the faux Scottish/Irish accents, though. I appreciate that they at least tried, but still a bit... eh-sounding. Oh, and totally love the bagpipe music they had playing.

Oh, and we were sticking around for a bit during credits, and then there's this big dedication to Steve Jobs for being such a wonderful mentor and whatnot on screen. Well. I guess that's why one of the clans was called "Clan Macintosh"? Another one was called Macguffin (har dee har har), and the other two weren't Mac-something so I forgot.

If you don't know why I think "Macguffin" is funny or if it even meant anything at all, try looking it up in TVTropes.

@d_a: I agree with everything you said about the movie (except the accents: the entire cast was genuine Scottish people, and the only one who annoyed me was Merida's weird enunciation) except I ended up liking the movie a lot less than you. Great music, gorgeous animation, pretty funny, and ADORABLE BEARS!!!!

But it's tonally inconsistent, and Merida was really unlikeable and obnoxious (and her character development was stupid. So she realizes that it's her fault that her mom turned into a bear. That's OBVIOUS. How about changing your behavior, Merida?). Oh, I do also disagree about the rendering of the characters. They were animated well, but I find the designs generally pretty terrible, aside from Merida's parents and Merida's hair. Her face, on the other hand, is hideous. I know it's shallow, but when you've got an animated movie, there's really no excuse for not making the characters beautiful.

So yeah, I liked parts of it, but as a whole it really didn't work for me. On the other hand, the trailer for Wreck-it Ralph was really good.

Oh, and the dedication to Steve Jobs is simply because this was the first Pixar movie after his death and he was pretty involved in the company. It would've been on Cars 2 if he had died six months earlier or on Monsters University if he had died six months later.

Did you stay through the credits? There's a cute scene at the end where all of the carved bears are delivered to Merida's home.
