I think that, while The Avengers certainly doesn't have a great plot, it instead goes for great characters plus the action, which I think is more important in the end. People do not become a fan of something for the plot; they do because they love the characters.

In your opinion, yeah. Not for me. Plot is just as important as the characters. I don't enjoy a story if the characters are fun but the plot is rubbish. For me, the story should be able to stand up on its own without using the characters as a crutch. If I go to a movie, I expect to enjoy the visuals, the narrative, and the character. If all I want are the characters, I go to deviantart, youtube, or Fanfiction.net.

I don't see how you'll enjoy just looking at characters in deviantart like in movies/fanfic/comic/moving mediums. Sure you can enjoy their design but that doesn't say much about personality or leave a lasting impression.
Sides, plot provides a stresser for characters which reveal their personality. A plot doesn't need to be hardcore complicated/good in order for characters to shine. I mean look at AV: People gush about the characters (Teijal, hi) and not much on the storyline. *arches eyebrow at your daevas*

Uh, you're just repeating the exact same thing iPink said. I know some movies are character-oriented and the plot is pretty much just a backdrop to showcase the characters, and it's fine if you enjoy movies like that. I don't. I like movies that have good characters AND good plot. I can like characters without liking the plot, sure, but it becomes somewhat meaningless to me. Re DevArt: They do have stories/comics/whatever too over there too, yanno... The daevas? What do they have to do with anything?

I'm not exactly repeating. I'm emphasizing the characterization which can drive a story far more than a plot. You can have an amazing plot but if the characters can't carry it than you still have nothing.
This is coming from my experiences with fanfic: I remember some fics had pretty good plotlines but the characterization was totally abysmal. And the reverse happened with mass effect 2: Plenty of great characterization but only passable storyline. Daevas: you clearly are gushing over the characters more than the plotline which, to be honest, is simplistic. ![]()

That's the thing! To me, if either one is rubbish, I'm tossing it. You people can be fine with just good characters, but I am not fine with it! Good plot + bad character = No. Good character + bad plot = No. If I have to make fanfiction to make myself happy? That defeats the purpose. I can forgive bad characters-good plot more, actually. I can grit my teeth and bear the bad characters just to see how the story ends.
I don't gush over the daevas. I treat them almost like original characters, which they sort of are considering how little characterization they have in canon I'm more lenient about plot and characters with RPGs. So long as the story is interesting enough for me not to ditch it within five minutes, the graphics are okay to look at, and the maps are not painful to navigate, I can enjoy it for the exploring and level-grinding. That's why I like AV1. Maps are pretty and not painful to go through, plot isn't too horrid, so it was fine. Didn't even care about daevas until my third playthrough and I still don't know why I like them. Can't be their charming personality ![]()

Well, I won't like a movie with a truly abysmal plot either, even if it has great characters. But I don't need a great plot either, so long as the characters are good enough. It's a balance, sure, but I personally think that the characters are of greater importance (which is, of course, not to say that everything else is completely unimportant).

I know. It's just a matter of preference. My preference is movies with both good plot and characters, and one can't compensate for the other. Neither opinion's right or wrong.

Whew. Been a while since I watched any movies, and for that reason, it's been a while since I post anything in this thread as well.
Heard that Dark Shadows is not as good as people were expecting, and to be honest, I lost interest of it when I watch the trailers because there's too much Narm.

Oh bummer. I had high hopes for that one. I suppose that's one of those movies that "stopped being over-the-top funny and started degenerating into stupid Narm that makes you cringe"?

I didn't expect Dark Shadows to be good, but at some level I kind of wanted to see it. The bad reviews just confirmed what I already knew, but it's still a little disappointing.
I'm kind of excited for the Snow White movie with Kristen Stewart. I'm expecting her to look dead for the whole movie (huh, maybe finally a role that she can play!), but the whole thing looks really stylish, and the Evil Queen is both an actress I really like and blonde, which is way weird for a villain. It's a silly reason to anticipate a movie, but whatever. ![]()

I was all "screw time!" and went off to the cinema to watch The Raven this afternoon.
I'm... not sure what to think. To me it kinda feels like Sherlock Holmes meet Phantom of the Opera meet Jack the Ripper... Of sorts. Poe is erratic and rather insane, just like Robert Downey Jr's Sherlock Holmes character. And in a way he's the real detective in the story, because the murders happen exactly the way Poe describes them in the story. The police only help by providing manpower. And there's a lot of scenes that took place in catacombs, at which my biased brain immediately screams "OMG PHANTOM!" If the Phantom of the Opera had been painted as an evil villain anyway, instead of a semi-sympathetic tragic-but-twisted character he has been portrayed as in many interpretations ![]() And there's a lot of gore. Blood everywhere. Very graphic murder happening right in front of you. I cringed at that. It's only ONE of the murders, but it's horrible. You get to see a guy being chopped in half by a giant axe and you see it happening. The man screaming, the blade slicing, the blood splattering everywhere... The rest you just got dead bodies. Scary, gory dead bodies, but still. At least you don't get to see how they get killed. I'm seriously not sure what the point of Edgar Allen Poe's girlfriend being there other than being motivation/incentive for Poe to play detective and write this story for the killer. I kinda resent that. It's near-but-not-quite "fridging", where characters are only there to be killed horribly to provide the hero with a motivation. It's almost sexist in a way, but whatever. I'm not all that gung-ho on feminism.

And thanks for the movies. ![]()

Oooh. Ooooh. Found the trailer on the net. It was actually called "Love, Wrinkle-Free". But since I didn't bother with the whole trailer I didn't know. Who cares?

Just found out they're making Les Miserables the musical movie! O_O!!!
That's DEFINITELY on my to watch list and probably to buy list if we keep with tradition. My family has the 10th Anniversary Musical Concert DVD and CDs of it.
