lol nice. I'm writing my own version now too as a sort of my adventure blog (i didn't know you were writing one), i love your though and will read on, it's a good, fantastic read.

there is one issue that i will want to explore, time permitting. and perhaps i will see it here too. great job so far.

Day 37

The first thing we did today after eating breakfast was to go to Veldarah and buy Lightning Spells. In Land’s End, whenever we had a hard time in battle, each one of us would just take one of them, activate the spell, and use it on the enemy. Works every time. And still does in Mt. Orion, as we found out later on in the day.

Next we ran over to Land’s End and went inside the cave at the foot of Mt. Orion. In the cave there was a wide canal of what seemed to be water, with a small boat on the other side. On our side there was a stone…um, altar? And the writing on it suggested that we should put something good on it. Anyway, Elini was raring to go and find her first daeva, as we were, too.

“Northerner, check how deep the water is with your orb staff, will you? If it’s not too deep I can go get the boat. I don’t mind getting my feet and boots wet.”
“But I do mind getting my orb staff wet!” I retorted. No way am I demoting my powerful orb staff to an instrument of measurement. “I’ll use this bronze rod instead.”

So I dipped the rod in the water (or what seemed like it). Then I saw my rod smoking up. When I got it out, the part that I had submerged was gone. The ‘water’ was actually acid! Elini stood there, speechless. Well, all of us were shocked. Me, most of all. If I used my orb staff, my precious orb staff that took ages to save up for, all that hardship had been in vain.

“I think we really have to put something on the altar,” Talia said. We stood there, silently, thinking of what to put on it. If we put something repulsive on it, who knows what might happen. Perhaps the acid canal will overflow, and then we’re dead. Or the walls could slowly move closely to each other, in the end squeezing us all. Or maybe nothing will happen at all; maybe I’m paranoid. But no one wanted to take choices. Suddenly Rhen blurted out: “Pomegranates!”
“Of course!” I exclaimed. Why didn’t I think of that? Pomegranates are, after all, one of the favorites of the gods.
“Where do we find pomegranates?” Talia asked.
“Didn’t we ask the lady with the magical garden to plant them?” I asked.
“You think they’re ripe now? We met the lady yesterday, for heaven’s sake!” Elini snorted.
“If it’s true her garden is magical, chances are they’re ripe now. Let’s go. There’s no harm in trying,” Rhen replied.
“She’s right.”

We rushed back to the magical garden, and as fate would have it, the pomegranates were ripe. The old lady was tending her other vegetables, when she looked up and saw us.

“There you are, dears. Perfect timing. The pomegranates ripened a few hours ago, and if you wait one more hour, they may become overripe. As of now, they’re still delicious. You can take them now.”
She pulled up the pomegranates and gave them to us. Rhen only accepted one, and told the old lady, “Thank you for all you’ve done for us, ma’am. You can keep the rest. We only really need one pomegranate.” After the old lady declined and Rhen insisted a few times, the old lady finally accepted the pomegranates. I wanted to take the pomegranates, run, and eat some. Why did Rhen give all the rest away?
“Why did you give all the rest away?” I asked her on the way back to the entrance to Mt. Orion. I really did want to eat a pomegranate.
“Because. Lars, why can’t you try to be less selfish sometimes?” That hit me hard. “She planted the seeds for nothing in return, and she did quite a good job of it. Giving her the rest is the least we can do for her. She may have even helped us save the world from the daevas and Ahriman. Is that reason enough for you?” Elini and Talia just walked on pretending Rhen hadn’t said those words to me. I kept silent. Am I really that selfish? How bad am I?

Rhen placed the pomegranate on the altar or whatever that was. And the boat, the one on the other side of the acid canal, moved towards us. Though it was wooden, it was unaffected by the acid below it. Dumbfounded, we went on the boat.

“It’s late now. Maybe we should check out how strong the beasts are up there,” Talia said. “Then we can go to Veldarah and buy whatever we need to get past them.” All of us agreed with her. As we walked out of the cave and out into the mountain, something hit me hard on the back and everything went black. I woke up on a soft bed, with Rhen looking down on me. My eyes focused on her.
“Lars, you’re awake! A large bird knocked you out cold hours ago and we had to fight it all by ourselves! Lightning spells are still effective against them and Talia and Elini are out to buy a lot of them and we’re in the inn right now. Do you know what time it is?” I rolled my eyes. Surely she couldn’t expect me to keep track of the time after getting knocked out?
“It’s really late. We got out of Land’s End as soon as we could with you, but it took us quite a while to drag you all the way here! Oh, wait; how stupid of me. Here’s some water. I bet you’re very thirsty now.”

I never thought of thirst before my eyes landed on the glass of clear water in Rhen’s hands. “Let me help you up,” she offered. I was slightly confused. Last time I was conscious, Rhen was angry with me for being selfish, and then she offers to help me up so I can have a glass of water. She pulled me up, gently, and gave me the glass. I gulped it all down quickly, and Rhen refilled it for me. I could only stammer a thank-you. Rhen looked rather concerned and asked me, “Lars, are you sure you’re all right? You haven’t spoken straight since you woke up. Hm. What’s one plus one?”
“Rhen, I’m all right! Besides, that question is way too easy!”
“Good. If you answered ‘two’ then I’d suspect brain damage. It’s good to have you back, Lars. Oh, by the way, I’m sorry about the pomegranates. Maybe I shouldn’t have said all those things to you.”
“Huh?” that was all I could say. Very pathetic, I know. I somehow felt that she was wrong to apologize; I should be saying sorry to her. Rhen yawned.
“Lars, are you sure you don’t need anything else? ‘Cause I’m really sleepy and tired now and Talia and Elini are still away. Anyway, just wake me up if you need anything. I’ll be sleeping on the bed opposite yours. There’s food in the backpack if you want to eat later.”

With that, she went to her bed and lay down. I got up slowly from my bed and took my diary, and now I’m writing in it. Why can’t I stop thinking about Rhen now? I don’t know. I’ll have to sleep it through. I think I hear Talia and Elini outside already, so I’ll go to sleep now, too.

Acid in the canal - very interesting idea - and very funny about Lars' reaction to almost losing his orb to it.

I like the way you are developing Lars here with Rhen teaching him to be more generous and think of others. It's a great evolution.

Very funny line about brain damage if Lars had just said "Two" - I love it.

kaze_mizuki: well, if lars had brain damage, the last thing rhen would have said to him was a harsh criticism. so now she's worried (why? you can answer that). and also, she's sorry (sorry?!) about what had happened earlier. i just thought that if i were rhen, i would also ramble to keep silence away because i'm sure silence would be awkward for both of us. also, i would apologize even if i wasn't wrong, just to make up for earlier. but i do agree with you that it's not normal for rhen to do that.
