@KTC...would you mind? I mean, because of research, can you name the list of books made by the experts? Since I have been calling my friends to the annoyance of my beloved Ambaru, I've began thinking that I really don't want to waste too much time on the phone. Just please???

~ps...the debate's a looong way to go, which is why I also need the help of books to make sure that nobody tries to strangle a member of the other team.

*halfway through going off-topic*

@ALL...I guess 2 debate sessions could probably solve the mysteries of swearing (now, now...swearing has mysteries too, right? Like why it became "swearing", why it can help levelling tempers, and how it works and functions for each people......BUT I do know that everyone has his/her own way of thinking, of course). Anyway, we'll see what the public and the rest of the world thinks about it for like, maybe in a month or more (hey! I take my time studying *not school books* *the Inheritance trilogy and the Pendragon books, yay!*). I wouldn't like to rush people just because of "Living With Swearing: Is It Harmless or Dangerous for The Soul?". Don't forget that other people have higher responsibilities.

Unless I need something else for the debates, I won't comment on this as I don't want to get blown into smithereens before I even see one.

Hmmm - This is a good conversation, as long as people can participate without either getting their feelings hurt or trying to hurt others' feelings.

I don't swear, and haven't for years, but in my 'tween years I got into it quite a bit. I'll never forget my mom telling me that it showed a lack of intelligence in being unable to come up with something more creative to say that was inoffensive to others who might be listening. I guess if you're filled with anger and hate that's a lot harder to do. I found it easier to say something ridiculous that made me laugh, thus getting rid of my anger.

I don't like to hear swearing ever, but I'd definitely prefer that to seeing physical violence in rl.

@twiceth: I'll pm you the titles. Warning, none of these authors are skittish when using the actual cursewords so read with caution. Also, this is an open debate and as such anyone can put their piece in provided it follows the rules

@rage: true. but sometimes, it gets to the point where you can't say anything. This is when it gets too far.

@sargon: I was merely pointing out that not everyone follows your ways, like me and I am not the only one. It seems to me you would rather force everyone to follow your methods for anger management which is rather funny don't you think? I don't force my ways on people, so why should I do something that doesn't work for me?

As for my supposed 'problem': I don't see why swearing for emotional release suddenly makes it a problem. Am I suddenly projecting an image of being an angry spouse beater or something equally destructive because I swear? I find this rather amusing as I'm a mostly easy going sleep loving person, a sloth in pretty much everything except eating.

@KTC

I don't force you anything.
I found you were trying to normalize people who don't like swearing.
You were saying that people who don't like to hear swearing are TOO sensetive. Implying that there is a normal level of sensitivity, and they just passed it.
And unlike all the "normal" people who don't mind to hear swearing, those too sensetive have a problem and should cope and not complain about the swearing people.
But those people have the right to complain and tell you that your swearing is not nice to hear.
About you, I don't want to analyze your problems.
Lets just say that sleeping a lot is not a good sign.
Also, from my own experience, I can see that I swear more when I have more bad emotions. But this doesn't have to apply for you as well.

@sargon: where did I say that people who don't like swearing are too sensitive? I never said that.

Here's my exact post on sensitivity:
"@tini: though there is such a thing as being too sensitive. One tiny harmless joke, and all of a sudden you're the bad guy, the devil on earth, the harbringer of destruction.

Yeesh man. Not cool. (fortunately, I only met one person like that. It was a very stilted convo since I didn't know what set the person off. Perhaps it would be an offhand comment on blue being an awesome color, or maybe a comment about cheetahs rocking. Insecurities much?)"

I said that people who are extremely (abnormally highly) sensitive are aggravating to be around simply because you don't know what sets them off. And really, it can be anything. (and I literally mean anything. Even a simple comment of a chair or a stack of paper being slightly crooked and bam! you're whacked with accusations.) These type of people I do not like hanging around because I simply cannot have a 'free' conversation here. I'm limited to simply agreeing to whatever the person said or face the wrath of said person. I have no voice around them.

I also mention road rage because these are one of those events where everything about etiquette and manners gets thrown right out the window. Trying to calm a fully road raging driver is like trying to stop a stampeding herd of bulls with your bare hands.

Actually, I never even mentioned sensitivity again until this post.

I have been arguing that swearwords are a normal part of language development and giving my own reasons on why i think this happens (mainly due to its mysterious taboo nature.) And I argued that what is offensive to one person isn't offensive to another so assuming swearwords offends everyone is simply erroneous.

Sleep: Actually, I don't get that much sleep hence why I like it lol. (Ah, the rigors of being a student who constantly studies. I have no social life lol.)

People complaining against swearing: As I said earlier, I really don't care what strangers think of my language. They're probably people I will never meet again anyway. If I worried about every strangers' opinions, I wouldn't have a voice at all. If there's rules installed against swearing, than of course I will follow (as shown by me following the forum rules. I already stated on my first post here that how I speak here isn't how I speak in rl). And of course I am entirely willing to accommodate requests from people I DO care about as long as their reasonable.

So if they want to rant at me, fine. But I don't have to listen to them either. It goes both ways.

When I first entered college my vocabulary of swear words was relatively small. And my uni being one that enforces freedom of speech, it was inevitable I'd be surrounded by people who swear a lot. I admit that I didn't like hearing them at first and couldn't quite imagine myself saying those words. But eventually I got used to them and they've infiltrated my vocabulary so well that I find myself subconsciously swearing at most things. And although I know it's not a nice thing to hear somebody who swears a lot but I don't mind much now. I mean the people around me use swearwords a lot and my being desensitized to them actually helps me understand what they're actually trying to say. Meaning, I have learned not to pay too much attention to their swearing hence I don't get too sidetracked with my offended emotions and I can pay more attention to their message. xP

Anyways, in rl I swear a lot but like most people here, I only do to express my anger, frustration and sometimes in a joking manner. Words are very potent, that's for sure. But they're only half as powerful as one's perception of them. I mean if people would take offense at every swearword I say then I'd probably get lynched.lol But since they just take it as part of my vocabulary (meaning with no malicious intent) then all's good.

We shouldn't have to be careful. Some people are just way too sensitive. There is no reason to freak out if someone uses swear words. It's not like they were talking to you and they're just words.

I disagree. They're not "too sensitive", some people just aren't used to swearing or hearing people swear. (Not like one is born & get used to it.) And it's normal coming from a person who's used to swearing, they wouldn't be so sensitive about it.

When I lived in Philippines (a very religious country), me and my family aren't used to swearing. Even the f-word was a big deal. But when I moved to hk and started using the internet (we didn't have a computer back then), I saw many people on chat who swear and almost use the f-word in every sentence so now hearing people cuss is like hearing a normal conversation to me.

I learn most of my swear words from my father, way back during my kindergarten and primary school years. This is not a joke. I swear he swears more than anyone I've met so far. So you can say I got used to it earlier than I should -_-

You're confusing me and KTC. I'm the one who said people who don't like to hear people swear are too sensitive.

@Ivana
I disagree. Swear words are just words. There is no reason to get upset when someone uses them. Even if you lived in a place where people don't typically swear.

honestly, I don't know if swearing on forums would make that much of a difference in my life. I'm a junior in high school, and am daily inundated with inappropriate innuendo and language, therefore somewhat immunized to it. amaranthia is actually a refreshing change of pace.

i've heard swearing my whole life. living in the city, i would always hear people cursing around me. my parents didn't let me curse when i was young, but now that i'm 16 they let me speak how i want to, and i swear a lot. i guess it's a bad habit, but it's not like i don't know when to turn it off. when i'm with my friends i curse and say more vulgar things, but i know not to speak that way at galas or events with my family.

i think that people do become very desensitized to cursing. when i was a kid and i heard a "bad word" it was a hugee deal. now, i say those words daily

it's nice that people don't curse here, but i really wouldn't mind if people did either

^ case in point. lots of people just don't care about swearing anymore. it's part of the vernacular. here, it's nice to get away from all that, and respect the boundaries of conversation in polite company.

Honestly, I have one solid opinion about swearing.

They're words.

I've never, in my whole life, gotten the big deal. I 've been exposed to those words all my life. Even when I first started hearing them, I never made a big deal.

And I do not get this at all. I do believe that there is a thing as being oversensitive. One of my old friends was talking to me once, and a minor swear word slipped out of my mouth. Next thing I new, she was screaming in my ear that I was going to hell. Again, keep in mind that I said old friend.

Also, there are so many other things that people can, and should worry about. How about disease? Starving kids? War? Should I continue?

@ Pokegal

you are very astute to make that connection. I didn't until junior year of high school. however, despite the fact that words are, in fact, simply words, there are those in society who will be oversensitive and make a big deal. In respect to those people, it is best to keep one's conversation 'clean' at all times.

I understand the whole respect thing. I, however, am perhaps, "socially deprived". I can't make small talk, which doesn't help you get new friends when you're moving from school to school. XD

^rofl, I rest my case on abnormal sensitivity.

as for them being words, that's what I've been arguing pretty much the whole time so woot XD I mean, technically words are nothing more than sounds we generate through our vocal chords. They only make sense to other humans who learned what those grunts and groans mean.

as for dealing with overly sensitive people: instead of pandering to their wishes, you could just avoid them lol. As I said earlier, people can shout at me, but I am under no obligation to actually listen or yield to their demands. If they won't do me the courtesy of actually listening before condemning me, why should I listen to their whining? Instead of using a lot of energy trying to interpret their whining, I can simply use that energy to use a much more energy efficient method called 'deaf ear' or walk away. lol

I don't understand what's the problem if someone swears, I mean let them swear, what will be the problem with us. Just hear it and take it out from ur 2nd ear. its not a big deal to swear, i've seen many many people doing so!

Because some people believe their way life is how everyone should live. And if they thinking swearing is bad and shouldn't be done, the same goes for everyone else. The best way to deal with these people is to walk away from them.
