I have gotten a golden salamander five times in a row. Is this just extraordinarily bad luck or am I doing something wrong. I remember getting a red one in version 1. I have experimented with returning to two save points: one just before picking up the egg and one just before handing it to the hermit. Should I just keep trying? Thank you for any help

You are very unlucky. From the walkthrough, the chance of getting a golden salmander is one in five. So chance of getting five golden salamanders in a row is 1/3125!
I don't think you have done anything wrong, however, there is nothing to get wrong with. You should go back to the save before you give the egg to the hermit, and wait for an hour for the egg to hatch. I have also tried three times to get a red salamander, you are at least two times as unlucky as me.

Oh! , I think you must do the Ivanna's Quest so that you have a lucky charm to be lucky , maybe.

Nope, the Luck Charm protects you from most status changer, it does not help other than in battle.

My luck is the opposite. I have tried many different ways and only gotten a gold salamander once out of 20 games played. Two of the games I used the saved game before I got the egg and saved before I gave it to the hermit lady.

Keep in mind the red salamander is only necessary if you want to marry Emma and Rye. Apart from that, the golden salamander is the much better option.

I don't think the gold salamander armour is worth the price, plus you need to sacrifice Rye and Emma's marriage.
