Interview with Warfare Studios (Newsletter) #1

We take this week to sit down with one of our favorite RPG developers, Raphael Delmaschio of Warfare Studios, creator of our featured game, Sinners: Truth Be Told.

1. What made you decide to become an indie game designer? Why RPGs?

I always loved games, especially RPGs, and I always wanted to create my own game. Each time I played a new RPG it inspired me... Then I got to know about RPG Maker 2003. At first it was just a hobby, but when XP came out and the possibility of selling a commercial product was available, I realized that my dream was possible and I went after it!

2. Which game that you've developed is your favorite? Why?

That would be Dark Souls 1, for at least two reasons:

A - It was my first game, so it represents a new life for me. That's an incredible feeling! I spent 8 months of my life working non-stop on that game, believing that it was possible, I knew nothing about the market and how to sell a product so I had a lot of doubts, but even with all the struggles the game was released and changed my life!

B - Probably because of Gauly too, he is my favorite character of all time, I just loved writing for him, and I still do. Dark Souls 3 is on the way!

I'm not the only one that loves him, most players adore him!

3. Can you tell us about your newest game, Sinners?

It's certainly my best effort so far! I've been waiting for the best opportunity to work on it, and it finally happened. I managed to form the team I always wanted, so everything in the game is exactly how I wanted it to be. That's why it's my best effort ever!



4. What inspired the name of your game?

It wasn't about getting religious or anything, but in that context, it is what the word represents... In Sinners you will see that every character, hero or villain has strong and weak traits. So this was to show that good and bad is more of a matter of perspective than anything else.



5. Can you tell us about your creative design process?

It's pretty simple. First I come up with the storyline, characters and etc... and then I decide how the game will look and sound. After I have the materials I start making it "real". While doing that, I make everything in the order that it will be played, I think it's easier to keep track of what needs to be done, and to make sure everything is working as it should that way.



6. When you create a game, who is your intended audience?

Everybody that likes games! Seriously, I try to be as diverse as I can, to have many types of characters, twists and etc... without making a mess. So, I think everyone can relate to my games, because that's the type of games I enjoy... where I have the chance to select the best things, not the ones that follow only one formula for everything.



7. Ten year from now, what will your games be like?

Ten times better than they are now?



8. Do you have any closing words for your fans?

If you liked my previous my games you will certainly not be disappointed by Sinners, and for you guys that maybe didn't think that my games were all that... you will have a BIG, GOOD surprise with Sinners.

Raphael, when you write your storylines, do you use a program or a special format for interactive media? With so many conditional branches, I just wonder how you keep the story organized.

Yes, thank you to the Fool for a great interview. I am a big fan of Warfare Studios games and I believe Del will continue to go from strength to strength. It is also good to see a developer who is passionate and cares about the quality of his games, always being around to help with answers and take constructive feedback.
