Tester Feedback
Posted by shaz on 14-May-2009 (9456 reads)

All of our testers have had some time to enjoy playing Aveyond 3 now, and just prior to the split into chapters, I asked them for some thoughts on the game.

Here are a few choice comments to help whet your appetite

Well, what I like most about this game is that it has many handy itmes in it and that whenever I am stumped it gives clues like where to go and things. the enemies are never too difficult to defeat and inbetween the game during a very serious climax, someone in the game always cracks a joke or too. What's not to like in this game?

I haven't finished the game yet, but the character development in this one has been really great so far. You get the characters to interact more with one another than in previous Aveyond games, and some of these interactions actually affect the ending. Also, I haven't actually seen any of the endings yet, but from a particular word I have heard from other testers, I think the ending(s) should be nothing short of interesting. I'm definitely looking forward to see what happens when I finish the game.

I remember being in total love with AV1 when I first played it, and it's happened again with AV3. I was hooked in from the beginning and it held me all the way until the end. There are many twists and turns - some that I would never have expected (in a good way!) The characters are all awesome in their own ways and their interactions never failed to make me laugh out loud. I thoroughly enjoyed playing AV3 for the first time...

tiniponi said:

I thought Aveyond 1 and 2 were wonderful, and I feel Aveyond 3 is even better. I highly recommend anyone who likes RPGs or Adventure games give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

It has many new features...

Two of my favorite new things
1) A way of teleporting back to the ship from anywhere until a certain place in the game
2) various Warp Eggs - teleport to and from various places.

The world is appropriately beautiful in places and somber and dark in others.

The storyline is interesting and involved ... it's hard to stop playing once you start.

I removed a segment of tiniponi's comment about the new features. Aveyond 3 has a very special technique that wasn't used in any of the previous games - I haven't seen any of the testers comment about this in public yet, and I know they all loved it. So I'm going to see if we can keep it as a surprise for you all - Shaz

Overall, I think this is the best Aveyond, yet. I felt more glued to the screen and had trouble stopping for the night on several occasions. The maps were large and very detailed and some of those dungeons, (Mt. Drake, Mirror Cavern), were wonderfully complex!
The non-linearity of the game made the world feel that much larger. There were several instances where there were many paths open to you, and you didn't know which path to try first.
I think what struck me the most, while playing Aveyond 3, was the atmosphere and feel of the game. I hadn't felt like that since Ahriman's Prophecy. Aveyond 1 and 2 were great, but I didn't get that feeling I got from Ahriman's Prophecy...until now.

Amanda has done an amazing job creating Aveyond 3. The game has you hooked from the beginning and continues to hold your attention throughout the game. The game allows you to explore more and doesn't just guide you to the next direction. I really like that there is no particular order in which the tasks need to be done. there were many times I walked into a place and quickly realized that maybe I should work on another task or level up a bit, but I liked that the game still allowed access there to explore and see the different areas.

After playing Ahriman's Prophecy, Aveyond 1: Rhen's Quest and Aveyond 2: Ean's Quest, I can say that this is the best one of the best games Amaranth Games has done so far. The prequels are worth playing, but so far this one is outstanding than the rest.

Mathematical law of AV3:
Variables
c: character interactions
p: plot
t: teijal
s: side quests
a: awesomeness ranging from 0 to epic.

c+p+t+s = a = constant = epic

(Yeah, I'm a geek)

I'm on like a 4-hour streak of playing Aveyond, I can't put down my PC! This game is definitely by far the best Aveyond yet!!

i can't stop playing it sometimes i forget to post bugs because of it (banging head to wall) they just made it to good.

av3's awesome! i couldn't stop playing.

my opinion? definitely better than av1 and 2. i mean, it has a mixture of both, and more added goodness.

the characters are great so far and the places just excite me! XD

I can't put down Aveyond 3 once I started with it. It instantly transports me to a world of fantasy and magic... where things impossible can be turned possible.

I was really caught off guard, initially, when it shows us that magic can be used to heal as simply as with just a swing of a hand!

...

It really throws what I learned from the real world out of the window. xD

This game rather surprised me. I knew it would be great and I knew that I'd love it... but I had the privilege of writing the newsletter for a little while and being able to edit the cutscenes and read the script and design document... so I knew, going into beta, the major twists I'd encounter, so I wasn't sure that it'd be quite as exciting as the other two were the first time I played them... but I have to say- I think it's even more. I'm getting caught up in the marvelous graphics, witty banter, and the riveting story.I haven't finished but I can definitely wait! I'm tempted to level till I can't anymore before finishing.

Kirroha said:

I felt that Aveyond 3: Lord of Twilight was superior to the two already amazing prequels. Mel was one unique character - she wasn't just perfect - she was a commoner, a street urchin, rude at times, and was a wonderfully fleshed-out character with a great amount of character development. It was nice to see how each and every person views their own world.

I promise - it's coming. We're working as fast as we can

It's the change in the release structure of the game - chapters - that has pushed the game back a couple weeks.

I love the reviews that compare the game to AV1 and AV2 and even AP, though I haven't played it. Amanda really wanted to make this game feel more like AP, and by some of those comments, it sounds like she's done it.

 Re: Tester Feedback
Most definitely she did. In fact, I said as much to Raine when I was teasing her relentlessly about how she needed to actually buy this one instead of just playing it when she's over here.

Ahriman's Prophecy was my favorite game- partially because of its ability to be creative and unique but still took no time to connect with. Rhen's Quest was creative and enjoyable... but even though it has the same enemy and some of the same characters as Ahriman's Prophecy, it took me longer to connect with it. It wasn't as unique and... homely isn't quite the right word.... Let's just say that I felt at home in the world presented to us in Ahriman's Prophecy but I felt like a visitor or alien in the world presented in Rhen's Quest.
I had a similar problem with Ean's quest. I absolutely loved playing it and was marvelously astounded by the beauty of the graphics and the interaction between characters... but it was just a place I popped into from time to time. There was no connection or need to get these character's out of harm's way.

Completely different story here. After I first read the cutscenes(just the cutscenes, mind you... none of the little details) my heart was pounding and I was highly excitable the rest of the day. I just couldn't calm down, I was so excited. Then I started playing... and ended up playing for a straight 14 hours. I probably would have been playing for a full 24 but my laptop overheated. It feels like I'm back home after some long vacation- and things have gone terribly wrong. That's how an RPG is supposed to make you feel. And it's a beautiful, dark, exciting thing.

I just like everyone else is dying for this game to come out. From how it sounds it will be incredible and I forget about sleeping when that happens. I want to know exactly when it will come out. I like the idea its a mixture of all three. I just hope that the manuevering around and fighting style isn't the same as in AP cause that wasn't the greatest. I like how in AV2 we could use the mouse if we wanted cause that was great though you had to time it just right to loot so I typically used the keyboard for that. I just can't wait to try it out.

 Re: Tester Feedback
I am not convinced by all these reviews though! I have played AV1 and loved the game so much that I made a habit of visiting this site once in a while. I bought AV2 right away and didn't quite like it like AV1. I only hope this time there won't be any such disappointment.

I have decided that I will not buy the game right away this time. I will first play the free hours offered and shall decide on if i should buy the game or not. I only hope this time there will be bit longer free hours, if not 10 hours like AV1 and unlike only 1 hour in AV2. You need to give us time to get hook up with the game. Afterall this type of game doesn't finish in just couple of hours, does it?

 Re: Tester Feedback
Waiting like this is new to me. I first played AV1 a couple years after it came out and then played AP and then saw there was AV2 at Shockwave where I get my games. They were already out for a while so I got to use goodies as well. This time I've decided not to use goodies the first time I play. Plus there probably won't be any at first. I saw on the forum that the release dates with be June and July so I imagine that version 1 will be out in June and version 2 in July. I'll have to play both and of course buy both. You can't play the game in an hour so I'll buy it. It will be great.

@ Bee- Actually, Av3 is going to be split into chapters. So, you can play the free trial, if you like it, buy the first chapter which should include around 10 hours of gameplay and will cost $10.00. If you don't like it from there, don't buy chapter 2 and the other ones when the come out.

@ The Actual Thing-
Wow! I can't wait! But I'll have to. Oh well. June is very close through. Hopefully it will be out in around 2-3 weeks. (It's May 26th when I posted this).
@ KTC's Tester Feedback-
Ha.... no offense, but you ARE a geek when you talk like that.

Again, Looking forward to the game!

 Re: Tester Feedback
@Aveyondgirl: Thanks for the info. I didn't know that it is coming out in chapters and each chapter is only about 10 hours. I thought it's like AV1 and AV2, which were like 50 hours+. It's only fair to have 1 hour free game-play for AV3 then, if the whole is only 10 hours long in total. I would definitely like to try out the game this once right away then and see if I would like to keep on buying other chapters (as you suggest). Btw, how many chapters are coming out in total?

 Re: Tester Feedback
Each chapter being around 10 hours is just an average estimation. I felt that the gameplay of Chapters 1 & 2 of AV3 was longer than AV1 or AV2.

I was able to complete AV1 in about 20 hours and AV2 in about 16-18 hours.

So, if it took someone 40-50 hours to complete AV1 or AV2, then I think it'll take them even longer to complete Chapters 1 and 2 of AV3. Therefore, for some, Chapter 1 might last 20 hours, not 10.

They made it sound like it was perfect. What about the quests? Are they too easy like in AV2? Surely there's room for improvements?

Ah, I see. Yeah, I'd say a lot of the quests are a lot more complex than some of the ones in AV2. There is a lot of back and forth, talking to certain people and hunting for certain items. You won't be bored.

I just noticed that the release is scheduled for June now instead of May. Does this mean that AV3 will be release at the end of June now? I thought all testing and whatnot was on schedule. Am I missing something?

 Re: Tester Feedback
If you go to the Announcements section of the forum, you'll see that Amanda has split AV3 into chapters. So chapter one will be released in the beginning of June and chapter two will be sometime in July. The testing was done pre-split of the game, so the chapters will have to be tested again.

The chapters will take a few months to be made, tested, and released. I don't think Amanda has said how many chapters there will be. I'd guess there will be a few chapters.

The game is a lot of fun with many areas to explore. There is a good amount of gameplay in chapter 1 and it is easy to go beyond the 10 hour average.

OK, you are wrong.

Seriously, Chapter 2 should be coming out only about 1 month after Chapter 1. Any chapters after Chapter 2 will follow the 3-4 month schedule.

My godness! Argoyle said that "I hadn't felt like that since Ahriman's Prophecy. Aveyond 1 and 2 were great, but I didn't get that feeling I got from Ahriman's Prophecy...until now." and I know exactly what he's talking about! I thought I'll never get to play something like AP but it turnes out that I was wrong...
So, I'd like to thank everyone who worked at this game for creating another masterpiece like Ahriman's Prophecy !

You have to purchase each chapter separately, but each one is half the price of a normal Aveyond game.

I'm a big fan of AP and both Aveyonds so I bought this one straight away and was impressed. Wasn't too impressed with the chapters thing though, you just get into the game and it's telling you to wait for the next chapter. I'd rather have paid the 19.99 and got the full game.

I totally agree. I love the Aveyond games..
the chapter thing ruins it. You get into it..and then you get "to be continued"..i feel cheated somehow....i guess because it was a short play for me. It felt like I was playing a trial version..but it wasn't. The chapter thing takes away from the fun of the game. (Big time)...it's like an on going cycle of excitement then big disappointment...until you finish.
