What's this? A new home?
Posted by shaz on 08-May-2008 (1426 reads)

Oooh looky! My own blog! How cool is that?

Mmmm - now I think I'm supposed to say something profound?

...

...

...

Nope - nothing coming to mind...

So, I can tell you about my games. Nothing as good for a procrastinator to be forced into action as telling someone and then having to commit huh?

As you may know, I have a desire to make games, and have gone back to Uni to upgrade my programming skills. But it's looking like Uni may be over for me. In a flurry of cost-cutting and red tape that is sweeping universities in Australia, many courses are being axed, including mine. The good news is, I may still be able to complete the course even though it's not being offered to new students. But I'm a bit over half way through, and have completed all the "relevant" units for my degree (the rest are all "filler" stuff), so I won't be overly disappointed if it doesn't continue. It WILL mean one less thing that I have to juggle, so that's not all bad.

I'm making a fun little game that I'll be posting here when it's done. AV1 fans might enjoy it - but before anyone asks/suggests, no, you will NOT see Rhen and Lars getting married Its working title is Nuts About Nuts. It will be done with RPG Maker, but is NOT a role playing game. I'm aiming to have the main game mechanics, interactions and level processing done in about two weeks, and then will be building and balancing all the levels.

I need help with graphics, so if anyone is artistically-inclined and would like to join a very small project, shoot me a PM. I'm NOT planning to use RTP style - more like "cartoon" images, kind of like the clouds in the background on this page.

If anyone is old enough to even remember the Commodore 64 and ever played a game on it called Panic, you'll have an idea of the gameplay. Some of the best games I've seen have been on those old computers.

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY SQUIRRELS!

Nuts About Nuts... very interesting title. I'm looking forward to seeing what the game entails, besides the mighty squirrels and nuts.

Unfortunately I'm no good with cartoon-like images, so I can't help in that aspect, but hopefully someone with more talent will be able to step in and help. You've always been full of great ideas, shaz, and I'm sure your game will prove that once more. Keep us updated as you make more progress, I'd love to hear more.

w00t! shaz's first entry! lol I didn't know something profound is needed. Too bad about the Aussie unis news. Love the Nuts About Nuts name (in fact, isn't it the title of one of the books in the Secret Library?). Me looking forward to playing it!

Sorry to hear about your Uni situation! Have you thought about doing online classes, perhaps?

LOL - you're biased

@Pandaba, yes, I looked at other unis/colleges in Australia that teach game programming, and they ALL require attendance at campus. The one that sounded the best was in Perth! I don't think a trip to the other side of the country once a week is going to happen...

I'm not worried - it was a "hobby" course. And if it crumples, I can do the rest of my training "on the job". It'll be a good kick start, actually.

What about online courses in schools that aren't in australia?

I *think* if I remember right, you speak english. Lots of Universities here. =P

Though you're right, just starting work might be a better way.

Is your game going to feature squirrels? Good luck with it and hopefully you can finish your classes.
