I agree! This is a terrific game.
![]() I downloaded it to kill some time on a Friday evening, and have been sucked into replaying it for a couple of weeks! I don't think Legend of Fae really fits in the RPG category. It is a unique strategy/puzzle game that combines RPG-like battles with a familiar match-3 game board and a great story. I hope that players who enjoy this type of game will be able to find it here. Claudia, the young heroine, finds herself fighting off hostile magical creatures with her own newly discovered elemental magic. But in order to cast each spell, she needs to collect elemental mana, and this is where the match-3 board comes in. Claudia must keep matching beads of the same color to continue casting spells. While is seems simple enough on the surface, there is plenty of depth to the battle aspect of the game, especially if you are interested in your score for each level, which is calculated from the number of "critical kills" you make. You encounter a wide variety of enemy creatures. Each creature is weak to some spells and resistant to others, so you have to choose what color orbs to match when attacking each one. Some creatures can cast nasty status effects on Claudia, such as poison or blind, which can be cured by matching focus stones to create mind orbs. Some creatures are more dangerous than others, and you will need to choose which to attack first. Every five levels brings a boss to fight, which are increasingly tough as the game progresses. And as the game progresses, Claudia can choose new spells to learn. She can't learn them all, which leads to extra replay value. Will she focus on one of the four elements, or learn a little about all four? Will she choose more offensive spells, or some defensive ones as well? Will she learn to summon another elemental battler to help? Those who like challenges can try to beat the "expert" score and time for each level. Doing this for the higher levels really made me think. Meeting the "expert" goals wasn't so much a matter of "click faster" (which would be annoying and would hurt my wrist) but "find a better strategy". In other words, the puzzle and level design is excellent. The reward for meeting all the challenges is exactly what I was hoping for - bonus story scenes! I really did enjoy the story about the conflict between Humans and the Fae - interesting characters, touches of cute humor, overall a little bit dark. The story is told from the Human point of view, but each character has a clear motivation for what they do. Neither side is presented as being completely "right". Even after unlocking all the bonus scenes, I still want to know what happens next. There's plenty of room for a sequel. |
