All made with default RTP graphics? Boooring >.<

I hope the gameplay is enough to distract me from the graphics.

I just have to say this but just from looking at the trailer the maps look really empty, and that really turns me off.

So I suggest if you want to gain more people's interest then you should improve the maps because I know that empty mapping can anoy a lot of people.

 Re: Path of Thanatos
I certainly wouldn't call the maps empty, but looking at the trailer with that mindset I can see how you could get that impression. Towns are filled with people (with one initial exception - the port town you see in the trailer) and objects (houses, market stalls, walls, pillars, etc.). Dungeons are filled with monsters, treasure chests, debris, statues, and later on traps.

For a specific example, take the first town - Ra Heru. It's a desert town, so it's very sandy. But you've also got cacti and weeds growning on the fringes, rocky plateaus overlooking the town, a raised town centre with a fountain and small garden, a number of different sized houses and pebblecrete paths leading to each of them, a small oasis in the south-west and a drainage system connected to it, a construction site in the north-east, statues to the north and pillars to the south, a wall cordoning off access to the water with the exception of a small section broken by the children, as well as the 12 inhabitants which are wandering around.

But the proof is in the pudding, so I'd ask that you check out the demo to see this description in the flesh.

Regardless, thanks for your feedback - I can see why you would think this, and will take that mindset into account when creating promotional material such as this in future.

I purchased the game and I have run into a bug. The carriage is stuck and wont move. I just left the first little town where the game starts and followed to carriage, fought the scorpions, and now the carriage will not move. I cannot go on in the game. Do I get a refund? Also, the price I paid was $12 something not $8.00.

I can't help you with the bug, but did you per chance purchase it with a one year warranty? That adds some extra costs to the game.

so the game is made with a costum tileset, it's costum music, a costum font and costum battle system?

and it only has 7 hours of gameplay? not really worth the price imo..

Graphics are kinda bad, but i hope the boss fight isnt Thanatos. The story would be way too plain. Just from the demo id say this is 3/5 but thats just the demo. I didnt notice the description was changed!

I just wanted to say that the game is good in my opinion. Since this is the developers first game ever, he did a great job. I think he deserves my support so I have purchased the game. He is 17 years old and seems to be very nice and polite. Everyone has to start somewhere and kudos to Amanda for letting him post the game here. Also I am having fun playing this game. He does answer questions and does help if stuck. He has his own website too. Good job Josh

A download error...Is this for the full game or the demo? Is it problem when you start up the game, or a problem with downloading the game in the first place? If it's for the full game and the download link isn't working, email me at criticalgames@tpg.com.au with your name or email address and I'll reactivate your download link.

 Re: Path of Thanatos
Ok, now I can actually use this post to say something now that I've finished the game. I've got a fair bit to say, so if by some random chance Ye Game-Maker happens to read this, I hope he doesn't get annoyed. Lots to say on this one, good and bad.

Music-pretty standard, not much to write home about.

Sound effects-same as music. Nothing really stood out.

Writing-I liked the writing a lot, actually. The dialogue mostly flowed well, sounded natural, and was (mostly) free of spelling and grammar errors. There was the odd mistake, yeah, but for the most part they weren't noticeable. One thing I really, really enjoyed was the dialogue options, important and unimportant. They gave the player a chance to control the flow of the game a bit, up to and including the ending. Very nice work.

Gameplay-Mixed feelings on this one. On one hand, you had a lot of little extras. Protecting the carriage, saving the villagers, a few neat little sidequests, etc. The teleporting thing was convenient as well. All of these things made this a wonderful game to play, that said, I felt there were a few things that could be improved on.

Note, most of this is based on my personal preferences. It's possible that others totally disagree with me.

Party members: Okay, I admit I like games with lots of party members. I like to be able to play with and customize my party a bit and that option just wasn't really there all that much.

Abilities: There were a number of abilities, but only a few of them I found really useful. Most of the status effects and debuffs work for such a short time that I didn't find them as helpful as I have in some other games. Also, no one had a heal-party spell and this really would have come in handy later in the game when you're facing a ton of enemies who cast spells that damage everyone (like a certain optional boss I really wasn't able to beat)

Monsters: I'm not one for grinding, it actually bugs me if you 'have' to grind, but that aside, it would have been nice if the monsters respawned so that gold wasn't so very limited. I wasn't able to buy the best equipment at the end because there just wasn't any money left anywhere. Monsters never drop consumable items so you have to either buy them (and you need them, I found, as healing eats away at your mp really fast) or find them in chests, and there weren't actually all that many chests throughout much of the game until it was getting close to the end. Maybe the feeling of 'adventuring on a budget' was what you were going for, and if so, fair enough. I just found it difficult to afford what I needed and that made the game harder.

Slowdowns-There were a couple of areas (mainly the big lamia battle scene) where the number of sprites moving about on the screen caused my computer to slow down and move jerkily. I loved the scene, it was neat, but something smaller-scale might have worked better.

That's it for gameplay.

Mapping-Meh. I'm afraid the mapping didn't really impress me. I've seen far worse, even in some professionally-made games, but you did have some areas that had a lot of blank space or just had a couple of scene decorations repeated over and over to fill stuff in. Perhaps in future, just compact your maps a little bit. Maps don't have to be big to be interesting. That said, I don't care about mapping as much as I do about gameplay, story, and writing, so this didn't bug me all that much.

Story-Yay! Okay, I really liked the story. Right from the start, it caught my interest. The MOST original thing I've ever seen? No, not really, but original ideas are hell to come up with, take it from a writer who's tried and failed more times than he can count. It managed to be entertaining, fun, and kept me interested right up until the end. One thing though of note: elemental caves. I'm sorry, it's a bit of a pet peeve...everyone does them. Everyone. I was kind of hoping I'd see a game without them for once. They're kind of overdone. Everything else? Great.

Bugs: Not a whole lot of these, just a couple of minor ones. In the forest town, the smoke is solid and you can't walk through it. There are a few places where you can walk through furniture and stand inside it. At the end, the captain appears different and completely solid. Minor stuff, nothing too serious. All-in-all, good job.

Game time: Wish it could have been longer, but actually for the price it was pretty good. Better (in this respect) than the Shining Plume games that were about 6 hours for $13 after tax.

Graphics: Okay...so you used standard character graphics and sprites. Bad developer. Bad. No biscuit *swats with rolled up newspaper*. No, seriously...I actually don't mind. Anyone who's playing these games for graphics should go spend $60-$70 on a 360 or PS3 or Wii game instead. Sure, it's neat when developers come out with a bunch of custom stuff...but really, it's not necessary for a good game; it's all 16-bit graphics when you come right down to it. Maybe when you make new games you'll play with the engine a bit more, but not everyone's an artist or a composer, and you shouldn't have to be to make a great game.

Overall-Awesome, awesome game. Okay, a couple of things about it anoyed me, but for the most part, bravo. This was a great first game and I hope I see more games from you in the future.

 Re: Path of Thanatos
Thank you very much for your feedback Justinius, it's greatly appreciated (no way I'd get annoyed ). The monsters thing was very much intentional - this was designed from the start to be a fairly challenging game, and removing the prospect of grinding entirely was one of the methods I used to achieve that. I understand you on the abilities, though - some could have been a bit more useful. And I'll take your advice when mapping in the future. Anyways, thanks again for your review. I'll definitely take your criticisms under consideration when working on future projects

Great Glad I was of help.

Oh, I did forget to mention one bug. The broken sword you find in the pit; if (and later when) you go down into the pit again, it's still there and you can get it again. You could in fact get unlimited broken swords.

Hi Eva,

That hint will come into play a tiny bit later. For now, exit the pit. There's a path that goes through the cliff area. It's designated by a small bit of light coming through. Here's a picture if you can't find it: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/855/solutionb.png/

Hope that helps!

I prefer the battle style in the Aveyond Series than to this. It turns me off the game slightly and the map does look quite dull in the fact that there is not much happening.

well, i'm in the castle and i have found adela, my father was taken by Crawford and after that i went outside.. there i met adela and she told me that she can lead me to my father!! she joined the team.. then i went to the sewers(after i've found the key) and there i saw adela again and she told me the same words with the first time i saw her.. then i tried to go upstairs to the castle and josh said that it wouldn't be a good idea.. so i moved back and when i tried to go through the iron door, there was an autorun scene with the same dialogue when you first meet adela.. and i can't leave the place.. i found onother bug earlier in the game but i don't remember right now.. sorry..

Ah, I see what's happened. After Adela rejoined your party in Idalium, you were supposed to go to the Church in the West district. When you went back down to the sewers, a switch was supposed to prevent you from encountering Adela again, but for one reason or another, it didn't trigger when you went back there. I'll definitely get this fixed up and reuploaded asap. If you want to send me your save file (at criticalgames@tpg.com.au), I'll fix it up and email it back to you. Or alternatively, email me your name and I'll re-send you the download link to the new version of the game.

My sincerest apologies for the inconvinience.

Josh - I also would like to say that I am enjoying the game very much. It has elements which catch my attention - much as Laxius Force did a few years ago. You have done a great job. Love the dialogue too - you have got to be English (enjoyed the odd "Blimey". Look forward to seeing another game from you soon (maybe a bit longer??? Pleeeze????) And I just need to ask a little question - I am on board the ship going to the Forbidden Lands - can't seem to get there though! Boat is stuck in mid ocean so I must have done something wrong. Cheers and all the best.

Thank you very much
Actually, I'm Australian - I've just watched a lot of British comedy/television

All you've got to do is stay up on the deck until it becomes night time (you'll notice that it will gradually get darker). Then a scene will automatically take place. It only takes a few minutes. I always played with the cannoneer to pass the time.

Hope that helps

Here on this page, as well as on the Aldorlea Forum and on the Over Cloud 9 forum (where a user named Synthesis wrote up a full review). That might help you to decide =)
